I tried to scream, but nothing came out, I tried to run to my parents, but I couldn't move.
It clicked suddenly and with a force I couldn't handle, this was the night my parents died, this was how they'd been murdered.
I didn't know how I was seeing it, why I was seeing it, but I knew what it was.
Nothing about the lead up made sense, nothing about this whole thing made any sense whatsoever.
I could feel Lindsays eyes on me but I couldn't look away from my parents, which I then understood weren't actually there.
Neither was my Grandpa or the other six people, they had been here, three years ago, but not now.
Four men moved at speed towards my parents, before either of them could react, they had a man on each arm, holding them still, even though I could see them fighting, and fighting hard.
I didn't know I was crying until Lindsay started whispering gently in my ear, "I'm so sorry Lily, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry."
I sucked in a deep hitched breath and realised tears were blurring my vision.
Did I want it blurry, should I close my eyes all together, I didn't want to see this, I didn't want to hear this.
I just wanted to leave.
I also didn't want to leave, I couldn't move and I couldn't close my eyes.
I needed to know what happened to them.
"You're going to take the spell off now, or they're going to kill you, those are your only options." My grandpa said, so calmly to my struggling parents.
"Dad this is crazy! I know you miss her, I know that, I miss her too bu-" He cut her off by slapping her across the face.
I gasped, she gasped, my dad screamed and snuggled harder against the two men holding him.
"You have no idea what you're talking about. You cannot understand the pain. But you will if you don't remove the spell." He pointed a finger at her.
"She doesn't understand, she has no part of this. She's innocent and I'm not going to remove the spell. I never will." She stopped struggling, like she was giving up, but the fight in her eyes was burning hotter than ever before.
"You say it like you've figured out how to make it last longer than three years, which we all know, you haven't." He shrugged.
"You wouldn't hurt us, or you'd have done it before now." Mom spat, her cheek turning red.
"I'm sorry you underestimated me." My grandpa nodded towards to two men holding my dad, without a second of hesitation the man holding his right arm let it go, but before dad could register what was happening, the man twisted his head to the side in one quick motion.
The snapping sound was sickening, but the way my fathers eyes stared blankly at nothing as he fell to the floor was worse.
It wasn't until my mothers scream reached my eyes that I understood what had happened.
I looked back over at my mom, she was on her knees, still screaming, tears streaming down her face, her beautiful eyes distorted in such agonising pain it was hard to process. My dad had been dead for three years, more than three years. But to see it happen was beyond anything I could have described.
"I told you you'd feel the pain I did. This is just a fraction." Grandpa gave a sicken smile.
I gagged.
I didn't realise I was mirroring my mothers position, in crippled agony on the muddy woodland floor, until I felt Lidsay trying to pull me up.
"I can't do this Lindsay, I nee- I need to leave." I choke on my sobs. I blinked water from my eyes, both my tears and the sleet falling around us, turning more to gently falling snow as the minutes ticked on.
"If you could leave Lily I'd be the first one shoving you out of this forest, but it's too late for that now." She whispered to me, her eyes stressed.
"Then at least stop this." I shouted, gesturing to the scene before me, and looking in her eyes, I knew she could, I knew she was able to do it.
She sighed and looked around, passed my head and nodded again, just like before, I turned to see who she was nodding at but nobody was there.
"What the fuck Lindsay, who are you nodding to?" I glared at her, my anguish turning to anger quickly.
"I'll stop, but I need you to understand, and to do that you're going to have to listen, and you're not going to believe what I'm telling you." She looked into my eyes, willing me to listen to her.
I nodded, waiting for her to explain, explain how I could see my parents, why she was here, how she knew I'd be here.
Everything.
She sighed and glanced at the sky, she seemed worried, blinking against the falling sleet.
She looked back down at me, her eyes determined again, "You can talk to the dead Lily, you can see them, you can communicate with them."
