My theory

This is my theory to how Ben Solo survived.

Ben was the first Sith to fully turn, which messed with the Force. It gave him such a rush of power after kissing Rey, that his body shut down for an hour, to cope with all the raw Force in him. Just after the battle ended, Rey left immediately, not knowing Ben was alive. It took him awhile to track her down, but he found the resistance base and Rey after three months of searching. He walked into the camp, arms up in surrender, looking for Rey. Everyone was so shocked that he was alive, they just watched him. Finn almost shot him in the head, but Rey defended him with her saber, eyes flashing. She announced to everyone what had really happened with the emperor, something she had been refusing to talk about.

Rey was so grateful Ben was alive, but she did not talk to him for a week. He found out from Finn and Poe that this was because she had been so scared and broken when he had 'died', and she was mad at herself for not realising her feelings for him sooner. They told Ben that Rey did not talk to anyone for the first month after the battle, just stared into space in her hut. She ate, but neglected the force completely, which is why she could not check if Ben really was dead.
