~Author’s POV
“I can’t keep this up forever.” Lex said flatly as he stared onto the eyes of the man which he was with. “All I’m asking you is to be with her, what’s so wrong with that?” The man answered as he took off his glasses. “It’s hard and you know it.” Lex protested. The man lightly rolled his eyes. “Lex, I just need more time.” The man answered, wary. Lex understood him and he’d do anything to make it all okay.
Lex took a sip of his coffee and breathed in. He was busy thinking about Jane and how she meant the world to him. “Does she suspect anything?” The man asked, taking a small bite of cake. “No.” Lex answered. The man suspected that there was something wrong by the way looked at him. He wanted to know what was up. “Tell me, what’s wrong? You can’t fool me Lex. I know you too well.” The man said curving a smile on his lip. “Nothing,” Lex answered, lie. The man gave him a serious and satisfying look. Lex caught his reaction and he groaned in frustration. “I love her.”
The man’s eyes widened in a bit shock. No, maybe not a bit, a lot. “What?” The man thought what he heard wasn’t real. “I love her.” Lex repeated. The man was speechless and he knew he had no right to protest. He had no right to question Lex because even he has done many wrong things. Lex looked at the man waiting for a response.
The man shook it all off from his head. “Happy birthday.” He said as he forced a smile.
Lex changed the topic, he knew the man was hurt. “So, when are you coming back?” Lex asked. The man leaned back on his chair and looked blankly at the ground. “I don’t know,” He whispered. He looked at Lex, confusion on his face. “Should I?”
“You should.”
“Why? What would I be coming back for?”
“Your friends… Family.”
The man looked at Lex and leaned closer. He was gone for a long, long time. Now he’s back, he doesn’t know if he should stay. “I miss everyone, I missed you.”
He said. Lex half smiled and felt happy. He thought he’d have an argument with the man he’d never seen until now. This was the man he looked up to growing up. Lex started to tear up a bit “I’m glad you’re back.”
The man gave out a grin and he started to tear up. “It’s been a long ride, but now, I am back Lex.” Lex looked at his brother who was sitting beside him.
He thought this would never happen again. “Me too, brother. Welcome back, James.” Lex greeted his brother.
