"Vivian, baby, they got him. He'll never bother you again. He's dead. He pulled a gun on the cops after a long chase down the highway. He was trying to get to Reno. But he's gone now that's what matters. He'll never hurt you again my love." Jordan watched Vivian's expression change. She went from smiling to crying.
Jordan moved to her side and took her hand. He sat next to her on her bed and pulled her against his chest. She cried until she couldn't cry anymore. And he just held her. He didn't say anything. He had questions but he would not ask them. He'd let her tell him in her own time.
She finally spoke to him, "Jordan I want to see Lexington and Layla. I need to see them. Call my dad and please tell him to bring them."
"You're sure you want them to come here? The doctor said you shouldn't have to stay long after you woke up. We can get home and see them there."
"No, I want my kids now Jordan. Please don't argue with me about this. I just spent the last week thinking I was never going to see them again. So please just get my kids here to me."
Just then the doctor came on, "Mrs. Knight, so good to see you're awake. You had us worried. How are you feeling?"
"Sore, very sore. I hurt all over. But I'm alive so I can't complain much. How long will I have to stay here? I want to go home."
Dr. Davis smiles at her, "Well you seem like you're doing okay. We want to run a couple of tests and then you'll be free to go."
Vivian smiles at him, "Can we please get those tests run today? I've got to get home, I need to be with my children. Their birthday is coming up in just a few days, I can't still be in here. So we need to get those tests run, I'll be leaving this hospital tonight either way."
She was so matter of fact about it, Jordan had never seen her like this. She wasn't budging on her decision either. And Jordan couldn't believe he'd forgotten the twins birthday was coming up.
"Mrs. Knight I'll get a scan scheduled for as this afternoon. I understand you not wanting to prolong your stay, especially when you have two little ones at home. How old will they be turning?"
"Thank you Dr. Davis, I appreciate that. They are going to be eight. They may be on their way here now with my dad, hey J, did you talk to my dad? Is he bringing Lex and Layla with him?"
"Yes babe, they are in the road now. They should be here in just a couple more hours."
"Doc can we try to get that test done before they get here please?"
"Yes, I'll put in the order for the scan right now. Hold tight and we'll get it over with."
Dr. Davis left the room and Jordan went back to the chair next to Vivian's bed. He took her hand and pulled it to his lips. He kissed her hand and took a long look at his wife's face. She looked at him and looked away.
"Viv, do you want to tell me what happened?" Jordan asked her quietly. She shook her head as tears gathered in her eyes.
"Trust me Jordan you don't want to hear it. Its too terrible. I'm not sure I can ever talk about it this time. This one week was a thousand times worse than the years we were married."
"Vivian if you need to talk about it, I'm here for you. I'm your husband, your burdens are my burdens. You don't have to carry this alone."
"No Jordan my burdens are my burdens. You weren't there. You don't have to live with what happened, only I do. Its going to stay that way. So please drop it, okay?"
Jordan so badly wanted to argue with her, tell her she didn't have to carry it all alone. But he wasn't going to push it right now. He could almost feel her pulling away from him. She wouldn't meet his eyes when she spoke to him, she allowed him to hold her hand but she didn't hold his back. He could see how much she was hurting, both physically and emotionally. But she wouldn't let him comfort her. And maybe he was being selfish, but he needed to comfort her, even though it would only make him feel better.
"When do you go back out on tour? You had to have missed several shows by now."
Jordan looked at her and shook his head, "Viv, sweetheart, I'm not going back out on tour. I'm staying home and taking care of you."
Her face turned cold and angry, "I don't need you to take care of me. I'm more than capable of taking care of myself. I took care of myself all those years ago, I can do it again. I don't need a babysitter or a caretaker. I just need to get back to my life."
"Well even if you don't need me to, I'm not going to leave again, not while you're still recovering."
"Jordan honestly I'm going to be fine, we need to get back to our normal lives, that's what will help me the most. So can you just try to not hover."
Before he could say anything else a nurse came in and said they were taking her down for her scans. "Do you want me to come with you babe?"
"No, just wait for me here. It shouldn't take that long." He reached out to help her out of bed and into a wheelchair. But she didn't want help, she wanted to do it herself. She winced from the pain. But Jordan stayed back, against his instincts to reached out for her. It broke his heart to see her like this. But no matter how hard it was, he was going to do what she wanted and needed him to do. Well all but go back on tour. He wasn't going to be away from her.
Jordan sat alone in her room. His thoughts kept taking him to the darkest places in his mind. He couldn't help but imagine the very worst. He couldn't help wondering about the week Jason had Vivian in his grasp. He knew that he had beaten her. He knew he had beaten her badly. But what Jordan really wanted to know was if his wife had been raped. He knew she wouldn't come out and tell him if he had. And Jordan wasn't going to ask her, not yet anyway.
Just as he couldn't stomach his own thoughts anymore, the door opened, and in came his beautiful children.
"Daddy!!" They both said as they ran to him with opened arms. "Where's Mommy?"
"Hey kiddos, Mommy is having some tests run, so we can see about taking her home tonight." He hugged and kissed Lex and Layla. He was so happy to see them. They were growing up so fast. Before he knew it they would be teenagers. Maybe meeting the loves of their lives, like their parents had. He couldn't wait to see Vivian's face when she saw the kids here. He knew they would brighten her day.
