The girl made it out of the grass field and into the forest on the other side, but she didn't stop running. She heard a couple more cannons, only causing her worry to grow; any one of those could've been Vern.

She ran until he felt she was a safe ways away from the bloodbath before she knelt over, placing her hands on her knees as she attempted to catch her breath. The taste of metal lingered in her mouth and the girl gathered up her saliva before spitting it out into the ground, the substance coming out red.

Adrienne sighed and took this momentary safety to walk over to a log and shrugging off her backpacks. She unzipped the first, which contained some rope, an empty canteen, purification tablets, a small switchblade, some wire, and some dried fruit and nuts. The second bag contained the same, but with a few packages of beef strips, too.

The girl leaned back against a tree, running a hand down her face. For the first time since she got into the arena, her was allowing herself to think. To think about what was actually going on at this moment. About how she was really, truly in the Hunger Games, fighting for her own survival.

And she wasn't sure if she was going to make it out.

Back in District Four, her brothers were thinking the same thing as they stood in the town square, looking up at the large screen. One screen showed his sister, leaning her head against the tree with her chest rising and falling in a rapid motion.

One of the others showed the brunette boy, pushing his way through the trees as he sprinted, trying to get as far away as he could.

Sire, the eldest of the three, held their youngest brother, who was only twelve, close to himself. He was worried about his sister's safety.

Because her only ally couldn't have been further away.
