He looks peaceful. She thought as she looked at the boy in front of her. Like one can harm him. And no one an anymore.

The girl was too shocked to be upset when she woke up the next morning, only to find her district partner and old friend still as he slept. If only she had stayed up, maybe she could have saved him.

Or maybe if she hadn't trusted so easily, he would still be here with her. He would still be alive.

Not being able to stand another second anywhere near the boy, she placed a gentle kiss to his cold forehead before standing and leaving the den.

The girl walked until she was in the middle of a grassy field. She could hear a buzzing near her as she walked, knowing very well it was a Capital mutt. No doubt a drone to record her movements.

The blonde girl turned and looked at it, not knowing if she was actually looking at the citizens of Panem or if she was just going crazy.

Either way, the girl raised three fingers to her lips, kissing them gently, before placing them just over her heart; a sign of respect and condolences from her district.

Little did the girl know that, back by the sea, everyone in town square had copied her actions, their fingers pressed against their chests.

After a moment, the girl continued her walk. She wasn't sure what she was going to do or where she was going, but she didn't care. It was supposed to be Vern who made it this far, not her.

Suddenly, the Capital anthem started playing, causing her to turn and look up at the sky. Displayed was the face of the girl from Two, which was immediately followed by Vern's face. She felt her heart drop at the sight of him, knowing it was the last time she would ever see him. Another tribute appeared after him; the boy from Six.

Her eyes went wide. She was one of the final three. There were only two more people out there until she could go home. Until she would be free.

But she had no idea where to start looking for them.

The words Vern had spoken to her just the night before echoed in her mind like a loud drum in an empty room. Her eyes trailed over to the tall, concrete dam on the other side of the arena.

A small smirk formed on her face. "Vern Everest, you're a genius."
