She walked out into the platform, the citizens of the district cheering for her. But she didn't look at them. No, her eyes were trained on the large screen behind the crowd, displaying a moving picture of the district's lost tribute.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped up to the microphone. "Hello." She spoke, her voice coming out scratchy as her throat went dry. "Now, I'm not really sure what to say besides..." She paused, her breath shaking as she felt tears gather in her eyes. "I'm sorry. I really am. It was never meant to be me up here; it was always meant to be him."

"Even before the Games, I told Finnick to do whatever he could to save him. To make sure he lived. But, when the time came, I wasn't able to protect him. And I'm sorry."

"He was more than just my district partner, or my ally, he was my friend. The one who had been there ever since we were children, running around with our wooden swords."

She laughed breathlessly, a few tears slipping down her cheeks. "He was like my brother. He was my best friend." The girl paused, taking another shaky breath. "And I couldn't save him. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Everything went silent as the girl couldn't find the right words to speak anymore. All of a sudden, everyone started placing their fingers over their hearts, just like she had done in the arena. She felt a weight lift off her chest as she repeated the action.

The girl smiled despite her tears and tilted her head up, looking at the clear blue sky, spotted with white clouds. "Rest in Peace, Vern Everest."
