A little while later, the group all sat on the damp sand, thinking and planning out their next moves. Everyone was still rattled up about the whole island experience, especially Adrienne, mostly after what happened in the water. Seeing Vern was too much for her.
"So," Katniss spoke up. "Besides Brutus and Enobaria, who's left?"
Peeta scratches his cheek whole he spoke. "Maybe Chaff; just those three."
"They know they're outnumbered." Finnick pointed out. "I doubt they'll attack again. We're safe here on the beach."
"What do we do? Hunt them down?" Johanna questioned bitterly.
Before anyone could say something else, a high pitched female's scream rang out out from the jungle behind them. "Katniss!"
The brunette immediately perverted up. "Prim!" She shouted before running off into the jungle, Adrienne following right behind her. "Prim!"
"Katniss!" The blonde girl shouted at her ally, desperate to keep up. That is, until the Girl on Fire had stopped in the middle of a small clearing, the screaming now gone. "Katniss. What the hell? You can't just-"
The girl was cut off by a voice screaming her own name. Despite not having heard that voice in what felt like years, she would recognize it in a heartbeat. "Addy!" The voice screamed desperately. "Help!"
"Matrix?" The girl she whispered to herself, worry covering her features as she looked around. Another scream came and she didn't waste any time in yelling back. "Matrix!"
"Adrienne, it's not him." Katniss tried to reason with the girl, but she just took off, leaving the brunette behind.
"Matrix!" She shouted again, running until she made it to another clearing, where she could see straight up to the sky. "Matrix!"
"Adrienne!" The Girl on Fire shouted, returning to the blonde's side. "Adrienne, it's not him. It's just a jabberjay."
Adrienne looked at the other girl like she was crazy. "Just a jabberjay? How do you think they got that sound, hmm? Katniss, jabberjays copy."
Suddenly, dozens upon dozens of birds started flying down at the two girls, screaming their names and hollering for help. Not being able to handle the noise, the girls ran, protecting their heads from the birds that flew down to attack them.
Up ahead, Adrienne could see the rest of the group, but they seemed off. Something didn't seem right. And she didn't know what it was until she ran right into an invisible forcefield just before reaching her worried fiancé.
The boy was shouting things at her with his hands pressed against the glass, but she couldn't hear a word he was saying. All she could hear was the screaming of the birds, their voices seemingly tearing holes in the girl's soul.
She covered her ears with her hands, desperately trying to get rid of the sound, but the screaming was replaced with the sound of blood pounding in her hurting head.
The girls both knew this was the start of a new hour. So they knew they would just have to wait. And wait. And wait.
