The sun hurt her eyes as it beamed through the open door at the end of the tube. It took a minute for her eyes to adjust, but when they did, she could see that this arena was nothing like she'd ever witnessed before. The platforms were a little ways from a sandy beach, in the middle of a large lake. In the center, on an island of rocks, was the cornucopia, above which was the clock that started counting down from sixty.
The girl whipped her head around, trying to find any sight of her allies. Of Finnick. But all she found was Johanna, who was next to her, only a rock path leading to the cornucopia separating them. The other tribute gave the blonde a knowing look, telling her to keep herself out of trouble. But when did Adrienne ever listen.
She turned her head back and watched the clock with a cold stare, waiting for the second the number turned to zero. Water splashed up onto her platform, the cool water soaking her ankles, relieving her of the heat that radiated around the arena. She glanced up from the waves to see the clock at three, which quickly turned to the number she long waited for.
Her heart seemed to stop as she heard the starting cannon fire. The girl didn't hesitate to dive into the water, heading straight towards the pathway next to her. Being in the water just made her feel like home, but it also brought back terrible memories. Memories of her first Games. She just shoved them aside and kept on swimming.
It seemed like ages before she finally made it out of the water and hoisted herself up onto the rocks, where she could see Johanna already making a run for the cornucopia. The girl took a second to straighten herself out before she stood and started running down the pathway, almost slipping on the wet and jagged rocks.
She was only a little ways from the main island before she felt someone tightly grip her ankle, pulling her harshly down onto the rocks. Looking behind her, she saw the tribute from District Nine climbing onto the rocks, his hand still clamped around her leg. The girl kicked him, hard, only managing to get him off for a second before he made it onto the rock.
Adrienne tried to stand, only for her to slip over and over again. The tribute loomed towards her, bloodlust in his eyes. She was just about to attack him when something flew over her head, sinking right into the man's chest as a cannon went off. As she looked over, she saw a metal spear sticking out of his body.
"Hey, Addy!" A voice called behind her. "That's for you, just so you know!" Turning, she saw Johanna rushing up, her district partner and the two tributes from District Three behind her. The brunette girl held her hand out, which the blonde accepted and hoisted herself up. "You, alright?"
Adrienne nodded as she walked over and pulled the weapon out of her attacker's still body. "We need to find Finnick."
"It's no use." Blight spoke up. "They're gone and the careers are right around the corner of the cornucopia. "We need to go. Now."
As much as she hated the idea, the blonde sighed and nodded, following her allies down the pathways and into the jungle.
