Adrienne glanced over and saw Katniss sitting alone on the edge of the water, her knees tucked up to her chest. Sighing, the blonde girl took a step towards the girl, then another, and another. Before she knew it, she was sitting down next to the Girl on Fire.
Katniss looked over with furrowed brows. The two were silent for a while before the older girl spoke up, shocking the brunette.
"I'm sorry for all that has happened to you." Adrienne said, glancing over at the girl next to her. "Truly, I am."
"I thought you hated me." Katniss scoffed softly, looking away from the girl and out at the water. "You could care less what I'm going through."
The girl laughed softly, confusing Katniss further. "That right there is what I don't like about you; you act like you've been through the fucking wringer, but you haven't seen shit." She looked over at the brunette, who was looking back at her angrily. "I know people who would kill to trade places with you in an instant. To have your life instead of their own."
"Really? Like who?"
"Me, Finnick, Johanna." The blonde said instantly, not missing a beat. "Any other the other victors."
Katniss was confused to what she was talking about. She understood that life as a victor wasn't the greatest, but what could possibly be worse than being Snow's little puppet?
Adrienne sighed softly. "We're like cattle; being sold off to the highest bidder." The girl, who was looking out at the water, looked down at her feet with a blank face. "For a couple hours, at least. The night, if they were lucky."
At first, Katniss wasn't sure what the girl was talking about. It all seemed to piece together, the many rumors she heard about certain victors resurfacing; Snow was selling their bodies.
"Why?" The Girl on Fire asked, disgusted by just the thought of it.
The girl shrugged. "We were desirable. Snow thought that he would be able to turn that into his own personal gain."
"I'm sor-"
"I don't want your sympathy, Katniss." The blonde cut her off bitterly. "I haven't received the worst of it."
Adrienne didn't have to say his name to know that she meant Finnick; the boy who was so often seen as a player, or a flirt. Katniss realized now that he never really had a choice; he had to play that part.
"Why are you telling me all of this?" Katniss asked.
"I just wanted you to know what really happens behind the Capital's closed doors. What it hides in the shadows." Adrienne faced the brunette next to her, the anger clear in her eyes despite her expressionless face. "To know that it could change everything."
Katniss knew what the girl meant when she said 'it'; she was referring to the brewing rebellion, which the Girl on Fire had been doubting ever since Snow told her about it.
"What if it doesn't work?" The brunette questioned. "What if he stays in power? This is war you're talking about; anyone can win."
To the girl's surprise, Adrienne scoffed. "What could possibly happen? People die? Whatever games Snow tries to play, believe me..." The blonde girl stood, brushing the sand off her legs before looked down at Katniss. "There are much worse games to play."
With that, Adrienne turned and walked away, heading to where she saw her love sitting in the sand, the words she had said ringing in Katniss' ears like a bell.
