{Book 2}
The island had stopped moving; that much they all knew. Finnick let out the breath he didn't realize he had been holding before hoisting himself to his feet. "Is everyone ok?" He shouted back.
He made his way around the back of the cornucopia, where he saw Peeta and Johanna crouched beside Katniss, who was coughing up water. As he looked around, he realized a person, a very important someone to him, was missing from the group.
"Where Adrienne?" He shouted to the group, worry and fear overtaking him. "Where is she?!"
Johanna snapped her head in his direction, her face almost showing as much emotion as Finnick's. "I though she was with you?!"
The boy shook his head violently. "No!"
With that, he took off the way they came, knowing she must have been someone in the middle of the two groups. His eyes quickly scanned the water until her saw something floating on the surface of the water.
A spear. Her spear.
"Adrienne!" Finnick shouted as the group rushed to his side. "Addy!"
When he didn't get a reply, the boy took a deep breath and went to jump in the water, but Johanna beat him to it, diving in head first.
The boy breathed heavily as he watched the water where his friend had disappeared. "Please, please, please." He whispered to himself, feeling the tears prick the back of his eyes. "Please, my love. Please, come back to me, Addy."
The seconds seemed to drag on and on, feeling like hours. He watched the now still surface of the water, waiting. Hoping.
Not but a few seconds later, Johanna appeared, dragging what appeared to be an unconscious Adrienne with her. Finnick rushed over and reached out to the girl, who handed him his fiancée.
He pulled her up onto the rocks, laying her on the ground gently. The boy put his hand on her cold cheek. "Addy? Adrienne, can you hear me?" When no reply came, or even a slight movement, the boy pressed his ear to her chest; all he heard was her slow, slow heartbeat. "No, no, no."
Finnick immediately started pressing his hands against her chest, this being the second time he's had to do this in the arena. But this was different; this was his love. His Adrienne. The boy fought the tears that threatened to spill, knowing he won't be able to concentrate then.
No one spoke, knowing that it wouldn't help the situation at all. Right at this moment, as she watched the two victors knelt beside the blonde girl, there was no doubt in Katniss' mind that Finnick loved her. That she wasn't as bad as she made herself seem.
It felt like ages before the girl finally started spitting up the lake water, turning over on her side and coughing it all up onto the rocks. When it was finally all out, she rested her forehead against the cold stones, the weight of everything finally seeming to come down on her. And she did one thing she swore she'd never do; not in front of these people at least.
She broke down. The girl hit her head lightly against the stone, as if the pain would make her forget what she saw. Adrienne felt strong arms pull her up into a sitting position before she was pressed against someone's chest, her face buried into their neck. She knew who it was, the smell of sugar and saltwater being a sort of lifeline to her.
"Hey, you're ok." Finnick said soothingly into her ear. "You're alright, my love. It's ok."
"I saw him, Finn." She said, her voice shaking. "I saw Vern. I saw him and he-"
"Shh, I know." The boy said, holding her tighter against him. "I know."
