The Queen Mary. A night Sam and Colby could never forget no matter how hard they tried. A night that haunts their dreams. A night that creeps around in their heads and tortures the young boys with memories from that horrific night. The night they learned that ghosts are real. The night it was proved to them through simple knocks.
Everyone in the group had been affected by that night in some way or another. Whether it was the occasional nightmare or full blown panic attacks in the middle of the night. Everyone was scared. But the two who were affected the most were Sam and Colby. They went into that ship as sceptics and came out with a belief in spirits that had been enforced to them in the most terrifying way possible. They were scared.
Sam was the first one to have a nightmare. He'd woken up at 3:30am on the dot, screaming and crying and thrashing in his bed until Colby came rushing in, followed by Aaron and Corey. It had taken multiple hugs and calming words from Colby, but the small blonde eventually told everyone what he'd dreamt.
"We were all running through the halls of the ship, being chased by... something, i don't know what it was. We were screaming, but I couldn't hear us. I couldn't hear anything, except the sound of knocking."
Those were the only words the blonde ever spoke about that nightmare.
Colby was the next one to have a nightmare. He'd been napping on the couch, when a terrifying vision had jolted him from his deep slumber, and the scream that left his mouth on repeat alerted the roommates pretty quickly. Colby had spent 5 minutes sobbing into Sam's shoulder before he could form a proper sentence, and even then the words were shaky and stuttered. And the dream that Colby re-called sent chills down the roommates spines, plastering goosebumps on their bare skin. Because Colby's dream was identical to Sam's.
And that's how it went. One after the other, each roommate who'd been aboard the Queen Mary on that fateful night; had the same exact nightmare. And each roommate was shaken from what they saw- and was left with a fear of closing their eyes.... in case they saw that.. thing. The thing that chased them down the halls of a haunted ship in their dreams. A thing that nobody wanted to describe because it was just too terrifying. It got to the point where the roommates would set up blankets in the gaming room, and sleep down there together. They'd never sleep too far apart, feeling comforted by each other's presence. Sam however, was the most scared. He's stay awake till the early hours of the morning on his phone, until Colby would have to force him to lay down. The brunette would often have to hold the blonde close until he'd shut his eyes; moving a gentle hand through his hair also helped. They did this for 2 weeks - sleeping together on the floor of the gaming room. But after a while they missed the softness of their beds. So after 2 weeks, the roommates went to sleep in their own rooms, by themselves - completely alone.
Colby was suddenly awoken by a scream. It caused the brunette to jump, and leap out of bed - instantly alert. He stepped out of his room, listening to try and find out which room the scream had come from, but he didn't have to listen hard. He could hear the sniffles and sobs coming from Sam's room, and he sighed. Sam had been most affected by that night. Nobody knew why, he just was. As Colby opened the blondes door gently, he was also aware of Elton and Aaron surfacing from their rooms, wondering what was going on. Colby flicked on sams light, and frowned at the blonde boy who was hunched over, hands covering his face as he sobbed.
"I heard you scream. Nightmare again?" Colby whispered. Sam didn't respond, so the brunette stepped towards him and laid a gentle hand on his knee. Aaron had come in asking what was going on, but Colby had sent him away. Everyone knew that Colby was the only one who could calm the blonde down completely.
"Sam... it's alright," Colby spoke softly. Sam shook his head, letting a loud sob. Colby winced at the emotion laced within the noise, his heart clenching.
"Sammy... baby, listen to me."
The nickname was nothing romantic, both boys knew that. Nevertheless, it was soothing to the blonde, Colby knew that.
"You're not there, ok? You're safe Sam, I promise you," Colby tried
Sam was still breathing heavily, tears still leaking down his face, but he was calmer. Colby was good at doing that. Making Sam calm.
The blonde weakly shifted over in the bed, and Colby got the message, climbing in beside the blonde and hooking an arm around his shoulders.
"I h-hate t-this," Sam sniffed, wiping furiously at his wet eyes.
"I know Sam... so do I," Colby sighed.
Sam let his head drop to the brunettes shoulder, a little sound of relief escaping his chapped lips.
"Was it the same dream.. or something different?" Colby asked, as he reached to Sams bedside table to retrieve a glass of water Sam had bought up earlier. Sam gratefully took it, bringing it to his lips and taking a sip.
"Same one," Sam gulped, letting Colby put the glass back where he got it from.
"I haven't had it in a while. I know Corey did a few nights ago... I heard him," Colby sighed.
The blonde sighed, settling on the brunettes chest. The only words that were uttered between the two that night were pleads to stay and promises to never leave.
But of course, it didn't stop there. Sam hard nightmares almost every night; the other roommates had them about once a week. The same dream, re-occurring and re-occurring and re-occurring. Getting more terrifying each night. Colby would often stay in sams room- either on the floor with some pillows or in the bed with Sam, if the nightmare shook him extremely badly. Sometimes Sam would come into Colbys room seeking comfort, and would snuggle up next to the brunette, all worry instantly subsiding. The roommates found comfort in each other. But sometimes, that just wasn't enough.
