Sam was lonely. Sam was a lonely child who spent day after day staring at the same 4 walls of his bedroom. The blonde boy knew how lucky he was. He was royalty, after all. He grew up in a palace, where he was waited on hand and foot; by several servants who would do whatever the boy requested them to. Sam had all the toys in the world. Any other 9 year old would sit happily in sams room for hours, playing with sams boxes full of toys. And Sam did love his room, he loved all his toy cars and stuffed animals. But, he just wished he had someone to share them with sometimes. The young prince was an only child; and his mother and father, the king and queen of the small kingdom, were always busy. Sam rarely got to see them, instead relying on some random servants to cook him food and read him bedtime stories at night time. The boy was growing up, he was almost 10. And he was sick of hearing the same response from all the servants whenever Sam would ask to venture out into the kingdom. They'd all say no, and the rare occasions when Sam would maybe share a mealtime with his parents; they'd decline his permission aswell. The blonde knew that their kingdom wasn't exactly the safest place to live, due to the enchanted forest that loomed in the distance. If Sam stood in his window, he could see the forest. The blonde often dreamed of what was inside, what creatures and animals. What magic he'd encounter. It had always fascinated Sam. He wasn't scared of it like the rest of the palace seemed to be. The blonde wanted nothing more than to run into those trees, maybe see some magical creatures like he read about in his story books. Sam longed for it everyday, until one afternoon, the blonde decided to go for it. The 9 year old boy had gotten quite skilled at sneaking into the palace kitchen, after years of managing to sneak in and pinch a slice of cake or a biscuit without anyone noticing. So, Sam simply snuck into the kitchen, dodging away from any cooks or servants walking around, and made a dash for the back door that led out into the courtyard. And from then on, it was plain sailing. The blonde knew of the gate around the back of the castle, he'd often see servants using it to exit the castle to go to the market for some fresh milk or eggs. So the blonde sprinted quietly to the gate, checking nobody was around; before swinging it open and dashing out of it. The blonde was smiling from ear to ear, continuing to run in the direction he knew would take him straight to the enchanted forest. It took Sam longer than he imagined to reach the edge of the forest. His legs were aching and his chest heaving when he finally arrived in front of the looming trees. He took a second to get his breath, before properly taking in the forest in-front of him. The trees were so, so tall; taller than they looked from sams bedroom. It looked dark inside, but that didn't stop the blonde from putting one foot in front of the other and waltzing straight into the woods. The naive boy was ecstatic, letting his hands run across the rough bark of the trees and swipe past the tall grass around the blonde that almost reached his knees. After walking quite deep into the forest, Sam was strangely disappointed to not have seen any creatures yet. He'd heard tales of fairies and ogres and unicorns and mermaids; yet Sam couldn't see anything.
"Hello!" The blonde called out, glancing around the forest. There was no response, not even the rustle of leaves. The 9 year old boy sighed, before calling out again, louder this time. And this time, Sam got his response. He barely heard the rustle of leaves, before he felt something being pushed into his back. Sam jumped, spinning around quickly, to be met with the sharp point of a wooden spear waving dangerously close to his face. The blonde gasped, eyes darting up to see the owner of the weapon. The blondes anxious blue eyes widened when he found himself gazing into another set of eyes, a darker blue than his own; but beautiful. A few wisps of brown hair were falling in front of the ocean eyes; and it didn't take Sam long to realise he was staring into the eyes of another boy, who looked around the same age as Sam, maybe a little older. And when the blonde tore his eyes away from the boys face, he gasped again; because this young boy had big, white wings- spreading out from his shoulder blades. Sam wanted to reach out and touch them, ask about them; but there was still an extremely sharp spear edging closer and closer to his eye. Sam took a step back.
"Who are you?" The boy asked. His voice was soft, gentle. It didn't scare Sam.
"Sam," the blonde answered.
"Why are you here?" The boy questioned.
"Exploring," Sam shrugged. The brunette boy narrowed his eyes, before slowly lowering the spear. Sam smiled softly, connecting his eyes with the strangers.
"You have wings..." Sam whispered, taking a step towards the boys, stopping abruptly when the brunette boy backed away from him.
"I'm not supposed to talk to you," the boy stated, the feathers on his wings rustling slightly in the wind.
"Why not?" Sam asked, trying to take another step towards the boy.
"Humans are bad. They hurt us.." the boy sighed.
"I won't. I won't hurt you," Sam promised, stepping forward; smiling when the boy let him.
"What's your name?" Sam asked, eyes glued to the brunettes wings that the boy was flapping behind him softly.
"Colby," the brunette replied, staring at the blonde boy with the sparkling blue eyes.
"Cool name," Sam smiled, taking another step forward.
"And.. your wings are... really cool too," Sam breathed, hand coming up slightly. The blonde glanced at colby briefly, as if asking for permission, and the blonde could see the hesitation in the brunettes eyes. But eventually, colby tilted his wing towards Sam, and the blonde grinned, letting his hand connect with the pure, white feathers on colby's wings. His small hand slowly dragged along the soft feathers, mouth hanging open in awe.
"Woah..." Sam muttered, and he could see colby smiling out of the corner of his eye. However, the quiet moment between the two children was interrupted, by; what sounded like a woman's voice, shouting colby's name through the woods. The brunette tore his wing from sams grip; but the boy wasn't panicked, he seemed calm.
"I have to go," colby sighed.
"But..."
"I'm sorry. It was nice to meet you," colby smiled.
"Wait, can't you-"
But before he could finish his sentence, colby was flapping his wings and raising into the sky quickly; and before Sam could even blink; the brunette was gone. The blonde stood; in the middle of a forest riddled with enchantment; baffled and amazed. And a pair of blue eyes sitting comfortably in his memory.
