(they're both 16 btw)Sam sighed, leaning his head against the window; watching the flourishes of bright green leaves zoom past. He looked out across the fields, the spacious land stretching out as far as the eye could see. Cows were mooching about carelessly, grazing on the bright grass that laid underneath their hooves. In one field, Sam could see a little family sat on a blanket, munching on sandwiches and drinking bubbly lemonade. There was a man, sat with his arm hooked gently around a woman's shoulders, and two young children, one boy and one girl, playing nicely together amongst the grass; munching on their sandwiches as they did so. The blonde winced, tears gathering in his eyes before he could stop them. He tore his eyes away from the family; jealously swirling in his chest. The blonde blinked rapidly, trying desperately to get rid of the tears as they threatened to spill over.
"Almost there guys!"
Sam looked up, glancing at his mum who was sat in the drivers seat; smile on her face. She was happy, you see. Happy to finally be free, happy to be getting a chance at a new start. The blonde envied her happiness. He wished he could be as excited as her. But he wasn't. The blonde glanced over to his sister; who was sitting in the passenger seat. She looked almost as grumpy as Sam; sat with her eyes glued to her phone as she typed rapidly. She was probably messaging all her friends back in LA. Sam almost teared up again at the thought of his friends. God, the blonde was going to miss Corey and Jake. Finally, Sam glanced to his brother; who was passed out against the window. Sam almost smiled, almost forgot about his current situation, just for a second. But the sudden reminder of the one person missing in the car, turned his lips into a deep frown. The last seat in the Golbachs car remained empty; a constant reminder that they were missing a vital part of their family. And that part was missing because two parents fell out of love. And one wanted a new start. So here they were, driving through Kansas in a rental car, boxes stacked all around them as they drove down country roads. The blonde sighed; shutting his eyes- hoping he could just fall asleep like his little brother. Just close his eyes and drift into a dark oblivion where his family were whole again, sitting on their sofa in los angeles eating popcorn as they watched some stupid comedy movie. But then he remembered that they weren't a family any more. That they were never going to be able to do those things ever again.
"We're here!"
Sam looked up, watching as their car pulled into a driveway.
"Woah.." his sister muttered. Sam craned his neck, bending around the seat so he could see the house. And when he finally laid eyes on it, his jaw dropped open. The house was old. There was ivy creeping up the walls and bending around the door, surrounding the stone walls of the house in a protective hold. The front garden was overgrown- long blades of grass waving around at knee length. The red paint on the front door was peeling, the knocker hanging off and the door handle caked in rust. Sam winced, shrinking back in his seat as he stared at the looming building he now had to call home.
"Doesn't it look great?" Sams mum exclaimed, opening her car door and hopping out.
"Looks like something out of a horror movie," his sister muttered, and Sam couldn't help but snicker.
"Come on you three, out you get!"
Sams mum was smiling, waltzing up to the front door and slipping a key into the lock. She went to open the door, frowning when it wouldn't budge. Sam snickered as he watched his mum barging her shoulder into the apparently stiff door until it finally gave and she stumbled into the building. Sam sighed, popping open his car door and stepping out onto the pebbles littering the ground underneath his feet. He grabbed his bag from the footwell and slung it onto his shoulder, walking up to the peeling front door. As soon as he stepped foot into the house, the stench of old people filled his nostrils, and he instantly screwed his face up. His mum was running around, flinging open the curtains to let the light in. Sam watched the massive clouds of dust erupt from the fabric as they were abruptly moved. The blonde looked around, taking in the dusty wooden floors, the fancy chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and the old looking rugs sitting in the middle of the rooms.
"Go pick your rooms kids!" Sams mum said happily, putting her thumbs up at Sam before disappearing back outside.
"Then come help me with these boxes!" She added quickly. The blonde sighed, before walking over to the stairs. Every time he placed his foot onto a step, it creaked worrying loudly, and Sam gripped onto the banister; just in case. Once he reached the second floor, he walked cautiously down the hall; carefully pushing each door open slightly to have a glance at each room. Once he was satisfied he'd found the biggest, he walked into it, dumping his bag on the floor and looking around. The room had one big window, a big open space where Sam could put his bed; and then a closet in the corner. The blonde sighed, walking over to the window and glancing outside. He could see the car from here; and he watched as his mother unloaded boxes from the car and carried them inside with a smile on her face. Sam sighed. He wished he could be excited about this. He wished.
