Luigi had hidden himself away in his bedroom for multiple days now, only going back out to grab something from the kitchen to eat, and when he did, he walked on all four limbs, like some sort of trembling wolf. He spent a lot of time crying and in fits that left his room uncharacteristically messy. He scratched words into the walls, 'Monster!' 'Murderer!' 'Animal!', etched in tally marks that counted nothing, and left long claw marks like that of a horrid monster. But that was what he has become.
One night, as Luigi had curled up in his bed, underneath the covers in entirety, tears dripping down his face in what was mostly silence, he heard a sigh that came from nowhere. It was back.
-"Oh, my dear, you must find a better way to cope."-
Luigi only turned his head away, even though the voice existed only in his head. Part of him ridiculed himself for treating this voice like a real person, but the rest of him felt it was real.
"How... how am I supposed to do that?!" He whimpered painfully. He heard the voice chuckle. It was cold, it often times deliberately steered him into terrible decisions, but Luigi dared to believe that the voice cared about him. It didn't seem that way and he knew it, but it always encouraged him, and even now, it sounded as if it genuinely wished to help. Thoughts swirled in his head like galaxies, but he put more focus to listening to that voice in his head. The ideas it formed were compelling, and Luigi saw no harm in them. He silently agreed. Had he become nothing more than a servant to the voice? No, that can't be it. It just gave suggestions, and sure, he agreed to every one, but that doesn't mean anything like that.
... Right?
Luigi put the thought away. He didn't want to think about it. He wiped his tears away with one sleeve and forced the blankets over his head. Luigi looked at the mess he had made of his room. He'll have to fix things up, but that was a different task. He heard a whimper beside him and he turned to see Polterpup, looking up at him sadly. Luigi gently put his hands on either side of the dog's face and lowered his eyes to be level with Polterpup's. "I'm sorry about all this, bud..." he said softly. Polterpup smiled, and Luigi felt a surge of warmth. The canine spirit hopped up and licked his owner's face a few times and he chuckled. It was the best he'd felt in the midst of this all, and while the young man didn't think it'd last long, he hoped it wouldn't be cut short too quickly.
