Childhood Friend (Written 4-6-20)
I remember when I was young
pestering my parents everyday
for that pretty little doll
with perfect long blonde hair
and her frilly pink dress

I remember feeling the excitement
when I turned five and saw
her smiling up at me through
her thin plastic packaging
a little bit of colorful wrapping paper
clinging to her cardboard box

I remember this and more
The summer I took her to the pool
and almost left her behind
The winter we made snow angels
out there in the cold
The spring we went to the garden
and made a small bouquet
The fall I made her a small plate
to have her Thanksgiving dinner

Now I brush her yellow hair smooth
and tuck her into place
Her eyes glimmer in the twinkling lights
that are draped all over the tree
Her smile warms my heart and excites me
to see that smile in the morning
on my daughter's small face
