These poems are inspired by my senior classes. I wrote these to get some closure on the school year. For each class, there's a free verse and a haiku/tanka!

AP Calculus F.V.
Counting on my fingers
simple addition and subtraction
Now I'm losing my sanity
to derivatives and optimization

Swirling symbols and shapes
Tumbling numbers and letters
All falling into place
on my crisp notebook paper

The problem is calculus
the solution is algebra
but all I ever wish
is for this so end quietly

I'm sorry for killing kittens
I'm sorry for kicking puppies
but it's hard to remember these rules
when this all used to be so easy

A s easy as counting my little fingers

AP Calculus Tanka
Calculus may cause:
extreme lapses in judgement
screams of pure terror
and tears of pain and/or joy
upon problem completion

AP Biology F.V.
Our wild exploration of life
We walked those complicated pathways
and clibed twisted ladders
We saw the past and predicted
our futures
We lost ourselves in the details
but when we stepped back
we found the beauty
in the world
in its breathtaking life
in ourselves

AP Biology Haiku
Connected in life
Tangled lines of ancestry
Connected in death

English F.V.
Forced teamwork with deadlines
when all we wanted was sleep
Days of convoluted articles and videos
Such a bore
A wedding kept us distracted
then a growing little baby
Despite the bad, the boring, the annoying
we shared laughs through movies
over candy and nachos
And I'm still waiting to hear
how to get away with the perfect murder

English Haiku
Annoyances made
to burrow in and torture
you with ignorance

Anat&Phys F.V.
A cool breeze through the door
to clear the room of this stench
Tiny bones that crack through soft flesh

No blood is spilled
and their bodies are cold
as we explore their insides
to test what we've learned

Anat&Phys Tanka
The human body
is incredibly complex
from a single ell
comes facinating networks
that fight to keep us alive

Civics F.V.
Hours of talking
Nothing but your sour lecture
Drill your words into my mind
I can do worksheets later

So teach me now

Talk to me about insurance
and why our health system is flawed
Talk to me about the elderly
that still control our laws

And skew my perspective
Open my eyes with your stories

Tell me about the kids
scared the wear the wrong color
Tell me about the bullies and their hit list
the promise to make them suffer

Teach me real life
Show me the problems of this world
instead of just dusty documents
and blind trust in the old

Civics Tanka
You helped us prepare
stuffed our head with pure power
showed us the dirty
messy heap we call Earth and
how we can mold its future

AP Environmental Science F.V.
I don't care about your lives
about your sports or your parties
Sure you can be funny
but I can only take so much of your smog
Now shut up so I can learn
about things worse than you alone
Like how as a collective we're choking
the very thing that breathes life
into our underserving lungs

AP Environmental Science Haiku
One stone is destroyed
and everything comes crashing
never to be fixed
