Mount Justice
~~Willow~~
Wally ran up to M'gann as she unloaded groceries off the bioship. "Cookie fixin's?"
"Snickerdoodles." She beamed at us.
"It sounds delicious!" I told her. The elevator opened, and Artemis and Dra- Emma- entered with Zatanna. I smiled at the three and waved. Emma waved back. I felt relieved to know that someone trusted me, even if I didn't trust myself.
"Here, Willow, let me help you with that." Connor said, quickly walking over to help me with the box of food that we had bought with M'gann. I was perfectly fine with getting it myself, but I was so surprised at his offer that I just let him take it.
"Dad!" Zatanna yelled. I looked over just in time to see her father disappear in a flash of yellow light.
"Batman!" Robin and Dragonfire yelled as the same thing happened to him and Red Tornado.
"Oh my gosh, Canary!" I ran down the hall past Emma and the others, heading for the mission room to look for our trainer. when my efforts were in vain, Kaldur attempted to contact Aquaman while M'gann was nonstop searching for her uncle telepathically. Artemis even tried to call her mother on her cell phone.
Negative. Negative. Negative. Negative.
All the adults were gone.
-------
"We've got a refugee camp going at the high school gym," I heard Dragonfire whispering to Robin over the comms. "Any luck with..."
"No! I can't raise the Bat-cave, the Watch- or any adult hero. Even Red Arrow!" I heard his reply on my own comm.
I looked around the said gymnasium of my high school. It looked almost like it usually did, except for the tiny children scattered among their much older siblings and neighbors. Wally, Emma, M'gann, Connor, Artemis and I were at the High School, working with Wendy, Holly, and my other classmates to collect kids from around the town. Robin and Zatanna were back at the cave, doing research to check out the situation in the other countries, and Aqualad had gone to check out Atlantis.
"Guess we're on our own then." Emma sighed, "Dragonfire out."
Artemis was singing some nursery rhymes to the little kids. I was listening too, with one of the tinier ones asleep on my lap after an hour of crying. After I discreetly put on a fire show for him, he calmed down. I think he liked the warmth. The others were laughing, correcting Artemis when she sang the wrong lines. It was quite adorable, though I couldn't tell if she was singing them wrong on purpose, to amuse the children, or if she truly didn't know the right words tot he songs. I knew I didn't.
Abby, Karen, and Wendy were organizing a sport game to distract some of the older kids, and Mal and Marvin had a storytime circle set up.
Wally and M'gann entered with another little kid. The little boy in Wally's arms squealed and started sipping from his cup.
"Did you call home?" Artemis asked Wally as they walked over.
"No answer." Wally said sadly as Dragonfire joined us. I moved the kid from my lap to a mat bedding to join the conversation.
"You could zeta there." Artemis suggested in a whisper.
"I've been collecting kids all day. I don't need to see another empty house." Wally hung his head as the door slammed open.
"Got three more." Connor announced, three little children dangling off him like their own personal jungle gym.
"Good. Willow, go help him out," Emma said running to get a bottle of milk from the cafeteria. My little friend was crying again.
