Chapter Thirty-One- Different Families

Mount Justice

~~Willow~~

"Recognized: Green Arrow, 07. Black Canary 13."

I looked up in surprise. I could identify Black Canary easily by her uncovered face and her perfectly styled blonde hair, but she wore civilian clothes, alongside a blond man who I didn't really recognize until I noticed the dopey goatee on his chin.

"Black Canary? Green Arrow?" I asked. "What are you two doing here? In...in your normal clothes?"

"Hello to you too, kiddo," Green Arrow grinned, holding out a hand for a handshake. "Please, call me Ollie."

"Hello chickadee," Black Canary smiled, patting down my hair. "I'd like to know myself. Batman called us and said he had something for both of us to see."

"Both of you?" I looked between "Ollie" and Dinah- at least that's what Black Canary reminded me her civilian name was on the official forms as my legal guardian.

"And you two are...Dragonfire said you were dating?" I said, biting my lip.

Ollie and Dinah looked at each other, than laughed warmly, not in a mocking way or a teasing way.

"We sure are dating, Willow," Dinah said. 

"As a matter of fact, we're also married." Ollie held up his left hand, where his archery gloves normally concealed an elegant gold band. Dinah held up her left hand too, free of her fingerless gloves so I could see her matching wedding ring.

"But you have different last names." I said, looking between the two of them 

"I kept my last name when we married, mostly because of professional reasons."Dinah explained patiently, placing her hand on my shoulder.

"But also mostly because she's an independent and beautiful woman who don't need no man." Ollie chuckled, patting my other shoulder.

"You bet I am."

"Aside from that sentence being grammatically incorrect and the statistical improbability of both of those being "mostly"," I started at Ollie, "You can do that? Keep your own name once you're married?"

"Of course. It all depends on what you want." Dinah told me.

There was a small coughing noise to call attention, and I just now noticed that Batman, Martian Manhunter, and Red Tornado were also standing in the mission room behind us.

"There's something you both need to see." He said, staring at Black Canary and Green Arrow. No one told me to stay, but no one told me to leave, either, so I found myself sticking to Canary's side and watching the security feed that Batman had to show them

In it, Black Canary fought Superboy, just in a normal, everyday sparring session. Well, normal until she "rewarded" him with a kiss.

Dinah, Ollie, and I all gasped. My crush was kissing the woman who, legally, was my mother. And also, apparently, a married woman.

"Dinah!" Ollie recovered first, sounding hurt as he turned to his wife.

"Freeze playback," Dinah instructed the computer before she could look away from the feed. "That never happened!" She promised Oliver.

Well, maybe it didn't, but the evidence was right there on the computer. And burned into my brain.

"You need to keep watching," I noticed Batman's suspicious eye on me, just now noticing my presence.
