TWO YEARS LATER
"Dr. Eyler, a patient has just been admitted with Appendicitis and needs an emergency Appendectomy. The surgery should only take about an hour as long as nothing goes wrong." At this point Frank and I were rushing to the surgery room. Frank was one of the nurses at the hospital.
"Okay, thank you Frank. Is Dr. Warren already there?" At work, I had to be formal with James. James was my surgeon partner, he convinced me to go back to school to be a surgeon. I'm glad I did.
"Yes. He's already there suiting up."
I rushed to the surgery room and quickly looked over the file. Thirty-two year old male. No allergies or previous surgery's. Has had symptoms for almost forty hours.
CRAP! We have to hurry. His appendix could burst soon.
It normally takes between forty-eight and seventy-two hours before the appendix will burst. I walked into the surgery room and started suiting up.
"Okay Dr. Eyler. For this surgery we will be doing a laparoscopic appendectomy unless we can't see clearly, then we will do an open appendectomy. You are going to perform the actual surgery, I will be here to help and make sure everything goes smoothly since you are still new."
Thank God for that.
"No need to be so formal James. We're friends dude." I flashed him a big smile. I didn't like being formal at work. He chuckled softly.
"Okay, let's get this done Lily." I was finally at the point where people could call me Lily, Ana was a different story. I didn't think I would ever let people call me that. That was for Cole and Cole only.
I stood next to the man and cleaned the surgical site. I made an incision in the abdomen and inserted the cannula.
"Carbon dioxide please." This was used to inflate the stomach and make the surrounding organs easier to see.
Once inflated, I inserted the laparoscope to determine the position of the appendix so I could safely remove it.
So far so good. His heart rate is steady and everything is going smoothly.
"James we still good?"
"Yep. You're doing great."
I carefully removed the appendix and placed it in a metal tray. It looked weird, like a messed up version of a dick. After flushing the area with sterile fluid, I removed the tools from the abdomen to get rid of the carbon dioxide.
I sutured the surgical site and cleaned the area again. Done. The anesthesiologist gave the man the reversal drug to wake him. He would be awake soon. We did a count on everything used to make sure nothing was left behind, all good.
"Nicely done Lily." James exclaimed.
"Thanks James." I left to go take my surgical clothes off.
When I got done, I headed for my lunch break. I was about to go on break earlier when I got called in to do the surgery.
"Dr. Eyler!" It was James. "I heard you were going on lunch break, wanna go together?"
"Uhhh...sure?" He has been extra clingy these past few days.
"So, you know what tomorrow is right?"
How could I not know?
"Yes, I know. Don't worry, I'm fine. I want to see his parents tomorrow. We should be together for it." Cole's death day was tomorrow. I tried last year to get his parents to talk to me with no luck. They were still mad.
"Lily, you can't be serious? They hate your guts. Why do you want to see them?
"It's the right thing to do James. You can come with or hide, I'm going either way." I meant it too. I wanted to clear the slate with Coles parents. I wanted them to know that Cole was the only one I loved. I had finally stopped beating myself up for his death.
His parents however, still blamed me. I sighed at the thought.
How do I win them back?
I shook the though and got my lunch. The rest of the day was simple thankfully. Before I headed home, I visited the man who had the appendectomy. I liked to visit my patients after they woke up. I knocked on the door and headed in.
"Hello sir, I'm Dr. Eyler. How are you feeling?"
"Ah, much better, thank you. You are the one who did the surgery, correct?"
"Yes sir." I gave him a warm smile.
"Thank you. Thank you so much. Oh, my name is Malkin."
"What a unique name Mr. Malkin!"
"Ah, my mother loved the name. I love it's uniqueness." I smiled.
"It's unique like you. Well, I just wanted to check on you before heading out. Get well Mr. Malkin."
"Thank you." And with that I took my leave.
When I reached home, I headed straight for the laundry room to throw my clothes in the wash. I didn't want hospital all over me. I dashed up the stairs butt naked heading for the shower.
After my shower, I plopped myself on the bed. I was exhausted. I needed to make dinner but I really didn't feel like it.
"Ah let's just do takeout. Pizza sounds good." I grabbed my phone and ordered a sausage pizza. I would have to go pick it up, but at least I didn't have to cook. I picked my pizza up and devoured almost all of it.
Yep, that hit the spot.
My phone started ringing, it was James.
"Sup dude?"
"Hey! So I meant to ask earlier but it slipped my mind. Did you have anything special planned for tomorrow? I know you said you wanted to see Coles parents but what else?"
"Um, nothing really. Just seeing his parents and visiting his grave."
"Oh okay... did you want me to come over and make dinner tomorrow? I just... don't want you to be alone." James was too kind.
"Eh, sure why not." I could use some company.
"Lily, are you really okay?"
Did I sound not fine?
"Yes? I'm good, don't worry about me. Imma head to bed James. Night."
"Okay, night."
I let out a heavy sigh. I didn't know how to react anymore. I clutched the ring on my necklace. The ring Cole would've given me. I didn't wear it on my finger, but I did wear it as a necklace. What else was I supposed to do with it?
"I wish you were here." I clutched the ring tighter. I finally stopped crying every time someone mentioned him, but I still missed him. I still loved him, I would always love him. I climbed in bed and thought of Cole.
Would I ever be able to love another man? No. Cole was the only one for me.
