One Month Later
________________________It's been one month since the Hargroves moved from California to Indiana. One month since the demodogs attacked. One month since Steve and Jessica became friends. Three weeks since Robin told Jessica she was gay.
Two weeks since the doctor confirmed Jessica was pregnant. One week since she started looking for an apartment with Billy. One week since Jessica told Tommy H the news.
She was told that he didn't want anything to do with the baby, and that was okay with her. She knew that Billy, Susan, Max and Steve would help her out.
Jessica pushed all of those thoughts away as tonight she was helping Max with her hair for the Snowball.
"Ow, that's too tight, Jess," Max complained for the tenth time that night.
"I told you, it needs to stay up for the dance, you'll thank me later."
Jessica felt Max tense up and was about to ask what happened but understood when she followed her gaze. Everyone had been tense around the house since Max stood up to Billy for her friends.
"Doesn't she look pretty, Billy?" Jessica asked.
Billy gave a curt nod and walked away.
"Here." Jessica gave Max a mint and chapstick. "Just in case." She laughed at Max's reaction.
"You think he'll ask?" Max asked nervously.
"Of course Lucas will ask you to dance. I'm not saying he'll kiss you, but you'll be ready if he does."
"Shut up, let's go," Max mumbled while walking out of the bathroom.
"You know Susan is going to want pictures," Jessica yelled behind her.
"Yeah, yeah." Max waved her away.
Jessica put away the hair product as Max got her picture taken by her mother. Neil made sure that Jessica would be able to pick her up at the end of the night and had her promise no boys.

"Have fun, but not too much. Don't wanna end up like me." Jessica dropped Max off at the front entrance to the school while Max rolled her eyes, getting out.
Max closed the door and looked through the window, "Ten o'clock, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah I got it." Jessica waved her away.
When checking in the rearview mirror, Jessica saw Steve dropping off Dustin. She honked, and when she caught his eyes, she motioned to the parking lot. Once Steve got the message, they parked next to each other.
They both got out of their cars and started up a conversation.
"Hey, Stevie boy, what have you been up to?"
"Oh, you know, the past week I've been studying for finals, but that's over now. Thank God. What about you."
"Doing the same and working at the library."
"We should hang out sometime. What are you doing right now?" Steve nudged her shoulder.
"I'm on my way to meet a friend. I haven't seen her in a little since studying took up most of my time."
"Fair enough, sometime this week then after your ultrasound," Steve stated while getting back in his car.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Benny's Burgers went downhill since his brother took over the place, but it was still one of the only diners in Hawkins and Jessica loved that feel.
Since it was around eight at night, the diner was completely empty, making it easy for Jessica to spot Robin in their normal booth.
With it being winter break, Jessica and Robin made sure that they got together at least twice a week and one of those times would always be at Benny's Burgers.
"Hey, dingus, any food smells getting you sick that I should avoid today?"
"Eggs, milk, and peanuts."
"Dang it, just what I wanted with my burger." Robin sarcastically replied.
After the girls ordered, they talked more about what they wanted to do after high school.
"So, any more thought about what you're going to do for college?" Jessica asked after taking a bite of her fries.
"I'm probably going to take a gap year to save up for college. What about you? Have you found an apartment yet?" Robin asked her friend.
"For the summer I'm going to work full-time at the library while Susan offered to babysit. Billy and I found an apartment, so hopefully, something like it will still be available by the time we can move out."
"Man, I still can't believe that you're going to be living alone with him."
"It'll be okay. Neil hasn't given Max any problem so that good and she's going to come over a ton anyways. Plus, you can sleepover when you're too drunk to go home." Jessica assured.
"It's a win-win for everyone," Robin mumbled and took a sip of her coke.
Robin and Jessica went on to talk about everything and nothing. They joked around and talked about Tammy Thompson for a while.
They felt at peace with the world and loved how it felt. That night, they wished that it could stay like that forever. Unfortunately, that's not what the world had in mind.
