Growing Up

When I was a girl a knight was everything to me
Head to toe in shining armor with my favor on his sleeve
When he jousted all the others knew he fought for none but me
Then we'd ride off into the setting sun where we would both be free

When I was a girl a prince was everything to me
With a crown on his head and a four-poster bed and a royal pedigree
We would sit at tea and he'd talk of the trees in the Queen's menagerie
Then we'd ride off into the setting sun where we would both be free

When I was a girl a man was everything to me
Sunlight glinting on his muscles and a tan from Italy
Fancy timeshares, cars, and restaurants couldn't keep us from the sea
Then we'd ride off into the setting sun where we would both be free

Now I'm not a girl and food is everything to me
But sometimes I sit and am still for a bit and wonder how it'd be
To give my heart to someone else for all eternity
Then I walk off into the rising sun where I am always free
