"Ouch."

"Oomph."

"Fu......dge."

"OW!!! Jen, what the hell are you doing?! Stop mutilating my poor hair!"

"POOR? Seriously Ver, that's the adjective you use to describe your hair?! I would call it a bird's nest. I have been trying to comb it for the past hour and I haven't been able to do shit because of the knots you have in there!"

That was Jen. Jennifer Frost. My best friend. She has been trying to get me ready for my 'date' for the past two hours. TRYING being the key word.

"I don't even know why you keep trying to fix her hair all the time. I am pretty sure that that 'nest' of hers is inhabiting a few creatures too."

And that would be Jerko Carter. Austin Carter, I mean. My other best friend. I swear, if it wasn't for the fact that I know him all my life, I would've gladly cut his annoying head off.

Austin grew up with me. After mom and dad shifted to Minnesota when she was pregnant with me, they got a house right on the other side of the street as the Carters. When they found out Mrs. Carter was pregnant too and was due only a week before mom, the two families decided to get on this journey of parenthood together.

Naturally, Austin has been by my side through it all. He's a jerk sometimes. Correction. MOST of the times. Which is why I call him Jerko.

Then came Jen. Austin and Jen dated for two years after which they broke up. They often had massive arguments about the smallest of  things which was why they decided to call it off last year.

Through the course of this time though, Jen and I became close too and soon the 3 of us were a group. Sure after the break up things were a little awkward but soon they went back to normal. All three of us are still best friends and are inseparable.

Coming back to where we were. For the past two years the two of them have tried to set me up numerous times but just my luck, those dates were horrible.

My first date was with Jake Keller. Jen's neighbour and a completely narcissistic guy. For our date, he took me to a unisex salon because it was his 'self care day'. Nono.... Don't get the wrong idea. He didn't offer to pay for my session or even invite me to join him. Nope. He asked me to wait in the waiting room for 3 hours while he was pampered himself. Being the patient person I am, I walked out after waiting for a long 7 minutes and 53 seconds.

Then Austin set me up with his cousin, Reynolds. What to say about Reynolds now? Maybe talking about how he came to our date with his secret fiance and asked for my help with their marriage is enough description for him. Austin even dragged me to his wedding.

Many more failed attempts at a good date and here we were again. With Jen dressing me up. Apparently Austin was particularly proud of this date he managed to set up because it was with his football friend, Colin Miller.

I wasn't all that excited for this one because if there was a bigger jerk in school other than my best friend, it was him but I was open to give it a shot. Afterall, I liked Jerko enough for him to stick around.

"Okay now, Austin, you and I need to get out so Ver can change," said Jen.

"What, no! I'm not getting out. Her comfortable bed is the only reason I tolerate this idiot in the first place. Besides, I have already seen her naked when we were kids. It doesn't matter."

I had pounced on him before Jen could utter another word and started hitting him hard on his head and chest.

"Ow! Oooh! Ow! OW! What the hell Ver?! I was just kidding, stop hitting me!"
