The cold, damp sand grazed the side of my face. My mouth was dry and lips were chapped, as if I hadn't drank water in the longest time. I couldn't tell if everything was quiet, or if my hearing was simply failing on me. I groaned, both from the pain that rippled my body and from the huge question that would soon be answered: who's going to win?
Just as I was about to get up, I gaged and threw up all the contents of my stomach, mostly ocean water. I struggled to get up and stumbled a few times, as if I were coming home after one hell of a crazy party. If only it were that simple.
Looking back at the waters, the waves were still rampant, loud booms of thunder echoed, and lightening licked the darkened sky. All the uproar was coming from Dark Forest Island, and from where I as standing, the fairies looked like a giant swarm of bees. I can't believe I lived through that.
I thought I heard something in the distance behind me, but everything was muffled, as if the fairies' screeching really had damaged my ears. I knew I hadn't passed out for a very long time because my hair and clothes were still drenched. I took wobbly steps, deciding to go closer to the direction of the noise. Is that screaming?
Yes. It was. I could barley make our the words: "Beth!? Where are you!? No, no, no!! Not you too! What did we do to ever deserve this?!"
Megan.
I tried running to the sound of her distant voice, but it was as if I had little control over my muscles. I tried anyways, and penetrated the forest. The voices were closer, but I still couldn't see them with all the trees and shrubs in the way.
"The fissure closed. There's no use in clawing at the ground," an accented voice said. "We have to get to Dark Forest Island. Logan must be there as will Malin. Logan will know what to do."
"Oh! Now you want us to go," another voice -Ally- said bitterly. "When not so long ago, you held Beth from going! Because of you, she's not here anymore. If you just would have let her go get Dawn, they'd both be alive instead of God knows where! So fuck you, we're going on our own."
"Guys," I tried calling out, trying to move faster. What happened to Beth!? My voice was so hoarse, the words came out like nothing more than a groan. I pushed past a tree branch and finally saw a small clearing. Ally had hopped onto Asher's back and Megan held his torso tightly as he began to levitate towards the island.
"Wait!" I called out weakly. They didn't notice me and quickly left my line of vision. Only Jacob and Owen remained, Jacob no doubt staying there to make sure Owen didn't pursue the others. I collapsed to my knees, causing Owen to turn in my direction.
"Dawn?! Bloody Hell, what are you doing here!?" Owen ran towards me, as did Jacob. Owen helped me up by putting my right arm over his shoulder and gripping me by my waist.
Jacob's jaw dropped to the floor. "Dawn... They did this to you?" His eyes filled with hate. "Megan is going to go hysterical when she sees you in this condition. God... They must have tortured you..."
I cocked my head to the side, trying to imagine what I looked like. If I looked the way I felt, it was probably deathlike. I had four deep gashes on the side of my face that started bleeding again, burnt knuckles, scraped arms and legs, a slightly wounded shoulder, a fairy bite on my neck, haphazard hair, random bruises; I was drenched from head to toe, weak, limp, wheezing, sore out of my mind, and no doubt pale as hell with dark circles under my eyes.
"What's wrong with Beth?"
"Um, you don't seen very stable right now, but we are going to figure something out and Logan will probably fix it. It should all work out."
