walking between the raindrops, riding the aftershock beside you
off into the sunset, living like there's nothing left to lose
chasing after gold mines, crossing the fine lines we knew
hold on and take a breath, i'll be here every step
walking betwee...

Isis takes the kettle off the hob. Her mother is lighting candles to keep the room in a soft light. The wind is blowing hard outside. Sometimes, shutters slams. Isis has such a composure it doesn't scare her that much. She's always been an undisturbed girl. She never loses her temper, as long as she knows she's not going to die at some point.
"Where did you say dad was?" she asks, filling two mugs with hot milk.
"I don't know," Lana replies, openly worried. "He's been out all day."
They settle at the table. Lana thanks her daughter with a smile as she seizes her hot mug. Isis takes her hand to comfort her.
"He'll come back," she soothes. "I trust his abilities. Either he's already on the way home, or he's gone for shelter somewhere, in which case we'll see him tomorrow morning."
Lana nods with a tense face. Isis takes a sip of her drink. She winces.
"Too hot... again," she sighs. "Nevermind. You should try to get some sleep."
"I can't," her mother replies in a low voice, looking outside with anxiety.
"It's up to you. Personally, I will resume this very good book..."
"Moby Dick?" asks Lana with a entertained smile.
Isis chuckles.
"How did you guess?"
"You've only read one book since the 1st grade," her mother says with obviousness.
"... Well, can't prove you wrong."
Isis finishes her hot milk, and gets up to put her mug in the sink. Then, she kisses her mother on her forehead.
"Bye, mom. Don't stay up all night."
"I'll try. Good night, sweetie."
Isis lays on her narrow bed and catches her book. The atmosphere offered by the hurricane fits perfectly the story, so well that she doesn't close her eyes until the storm has subsided.
The sun is already high in the sky when she gets up. Its light is passing through her yellow curtains, giving nice vibes to the room. All is quiet, and only a few birds have the nerve to sing despite the recent foul wind.
Isis goes to pour herself a cup of coffee and steps outside her house to see the damage. She's surprised to find that she'd expected worse. Most of the surroundings trees are disturbingly leaning, and a lot of big branches have fallen to the ground, but her house is unharmed. On the other hand, some of the shutters are broken and some things which surely belonged to the neighborhood are lying in the fallow garden. Overall, they were rather lucky.
Isis goes back inside. She sees a piece of scribbled paper waiting for her on the table.
Dad hasn't return. I'm going to seek information from the neighbors. Don't worry, sweetie, I probably wouldn't be back until tonight. XO
She puts the paper in her pocket. Now, she's starting to worry. Just enough to get dressed quickly, put on her big brown boots and get out of the house. She takes her bike out of the shed, and goes straight to the police station.
There, she sees her mother with some police officers and a few rescuers. Her heart starts to race unpleasantly. Lana sobs as she talks to the officers. When she sees her daughter, she rushes over to give her a hug.
"What's happening, Mom?" Isis asks, freaked out.
"Oh, sweetheart..." her mother stutters.
"Mom?" Isis insists, her eyes clouded. "Please..."
Lana shakes her head negatively. She understands.
Isis bursts into tears. She strongly hugs her mother. Lana has then to come back and finish her testimony, but Iz is unable to move. She stands here, her legs shaking, smothering her sobs in her hands. She doesn't pay attention to the figure approaching her quickly. Two strong arms wrap around her shoulders. Totally downcast, Isis lets herself be easily.
"It's okay," whispers John B's reassuring voice. "You're gonna be okay."
"No, no, no..." she moans. "He... He's... I- I can't..."
Someone joins the hug. Isis recognizes Kiara, who's crying too.
"I'm so sorry, Izzy..." she says genuinely while slipping her face into her neck.
Pope and JJ finally catch up and all four of them try to comfort their sorrowful friend. But for now, Isis is inconsolable. She would rather have her house destroyed by the storm than her family. She would rather have lost her property than her father.
But, guess what? In real life, you never get to choose.
