"Keep safe, son."

"Dad, you said that for the nth time already. 'Wag kang mag-alala. Okay na ako."

He sighed. Alam ko namang ingatan ang sarili ko. Hindi na nila kailangan mag-alala. I'm healthy and strong. Alive for kicking!

"Jason, it has been years since the incident. Alam kong wala na si Audrick, hindi lang talaga namin maiwasan ang mag-alala sa 'yo. We're your parents. Natural lang na mag-alala kami sa 'yo." Mom said.

I smiled at her and placed my hands on her shoulders. "No need to worry, Mom. Kaya ko na 'to. I didn't spend my years here in California for nothing. I built back my life and now I'm going back."

She smiled at me then hugged me. "Make sure to win her back, alright?" she patted my back.

I pulled away from her and went to Dad. We did the manly hug and he told me to keep safe again with a chuckle.

"Dad!" I whined.

"Sorry! Ilang taon ka din naman kasi nawala sa 'min kaya ganito ako umakto."

I suddenly felt guilty. The memories from way back just played in my mind like a movie.

Everyone thought I died that day, but the doctors saved me and that's when I met Zero Greil's parents. They adopted me since the police said that I was better hidden. Nakatakas pa kasi si Audrick noon. Mas safe yung alam ng lahat na patay ako.

Nahirapan ako, syempre. Hindi ako sanay na malayo sa pamilya ko lalo na kay Viono. Close kaming dalawa and when I heard that she changed after my so-called death, I was devastated.

Gustung-gusto nang bumalik sa kanila, but the Greils stopped me.

Isang suntok ang natanggap ko mula kay Zero. "Ow! That really did hurt!" sabi niya habang nakahawak sa kamay niya.

"Now where was I? Ahh oo nga pala. Are you fucking crazy?! Gusto mo bang mapahamak ang pamilya mo?! Teka! Baka gusto mo nang mamatay ng tuluyan?!"

And that snapped me out on whatever reverie I was in. Hindi ako nag-iisip noon. All I wanted was to go back to my family. Buti nalang nauntog ni Zero yung ulo ko sa kakasuntok niya sa 'kin.

Kaya ayun, I stayed in their house. Hindi nila ako pinalabas. I spent my days planning on catching Audrick. Hindi alam ng ibang kamag-anak nila Zero na inampon nila ako.

Silang tatlo lang ang may alam tungkol sa 'kin.

And the day arrived when Zero was so weak and sick. He had leukemia which was so unbelievable since he was strong and healthy.

We were all devastated. Lalo na ako kasi naging close kaming dalawa at saka siya ang naging taga-payo ko. He always helped me. He brought me food and other things from the outside. He taught me things I never knew before. I was home-schooled and he was my teacher.

He was a genius and I admired him for it.

"Promise mo sa 'kin, Jason na huhulihin mo ang Audrick na 'yon, ah?"

"Yes. Promise 'yan."

And that was our last conversation. He died after that. And that day was the start of me being an impostor.

"Marie and I had planned something, Jason."

"What is it, tito?"

"You'll be Zero Greil for now until you catch Audrick. We'll be moving. Live in a new neighborhood where no one knows us. And you'll be acting like a normal school boy while you hunt for the guy."

Who was I to decline it? They were helping me and I thought of Zero. He would agree to this kaya agad kong tinanggap ang alok nila.

Little did I know that Zero had a best friend named Jason Jaime. He found out about our secret and he went ballastic. The Greils explained everything to him and told him to keep it a secret.

"This is also for your own sake, Jaime!"

"Oh I don't give a fuck, tito! Did Zero even agree to this?!"

"Yes he did. That was his last wish." sabi ni tita.

Natigilan naman siya at saka tinuro ako. "You. You're just an impostor. Hinding-hindi kita matatanggap. Yes, I will keep your secret, but I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it for my best friend."

And since that day we were never in good terms.

We moved in to a new place. I went to school and that's when I met her. Niui Drey.  The Greils told me not to have any friends kasi baka mapahamak sila. I did my best to avoid her and my other friends, pero sila 'tong lapit nang lapit sa 'kin.

"Zero! Grabe! Ang gwapo mo!" sigaw ni Niui sa harapan ko.

My mouth hung agape. This girl sure is frank. Hindi man lang nahiya. I was about to smile at her, but stopped when I remembered the Greils advice on me echoing in my mind.

And so I treated her coldly. Nahirapan ako kasi hindi ko naman ako yung taong mahilig manakit ng mga tao. It wasn't in my nature, but then I realized that we needed to hurt people to keep them safe.

But no shit sherlock. Hindi ako tinantanan ni Niui. Lahat ginawa ko na para ipagtabuyan siya pero ang tigas niya. Mas lalo tuloy niya akong ginulo. At habang ginugulo niya ako, mas lalo tuloy akong nahuhulog sa kanya.

Kaya selos na selos ako nang makita ko siya na kasama si Jaime. And when she had an accident, doon ko nalaman ang totoong kahulugan na: Life is short.

I confessed my feelings for her. Natakot ako kasi baka mawala siya sa 'kin na hindi man lang niya nalalaman na mahal ko siya.

I broke the rules and loved her. I knew what the consequences were, but I didn't gave a damn about it. I would do everything to protect her.

And now everything's in its place already. I was already successful and there was still something missing. Lahat makukuha ko pero may kulang pa. Isang malaking parte sa buhay ko.

Niui Drey.

She didn't leave my mind and heart during the past few years. I hadn't laid my eyes on other girls during those years. Niui is the one I love. It never did fade away. Not a single bit.

But when I heard that she was with Jaime, this may sound so gay, but it broke my heart. Did her feelings for me really did fade away?

I won't believe that until she would be the one to tell me she doesn't love me anymore.

I will never give up. I will always annoy her like she always did to me when we were in high school.

I would do everything to win her heart back.
