I walked beside Newt as we headed to the field. He didn't talk to me the entire way. He kept his eyes straight ahead while I kept sneaking looks at him. I couldn't help it. He made me feel curious. I knew who he was but my dream had disappeared.
"You will want to start with shucking some corn." He tells me, leading me to a crop of corn.
"Is that how you guys got shuck?" I make a dumb joke.
He shakes his head at me, obviously annoyed. I shuck some corn for almost an hour as I hazily try to remember the names in my dream or how I know Newt. I slightly remember it all but it was all just a frustrating blur.
"Well done greenie." Newt says. "Gally needs some wood so we are gonna start by shucking the bloody life out of some trees."
"Sounds brutal." I remark. "Poor trees."
I almost see his lips being tugged upwards into a smile but he shook it off.
We walk side by side to a dead tree and hit away at it.
"Minho said I could be a runner." I tell him. "I hope he meant it."
Newt shakes his head. "You don't want to be a runner."
"Why?" I question.
"Audrey it is so bloody dangerous out in the maze." He almost sneers.
"Is that how you fell? Because you had once been a runner?"
He swings his knife into the tree and stares at me. "Audrey you are driving me mad! You show up and suddenly you say you know me but you don't know me! This past life I once had must have been shucking awful if I volunteered to come here!"
Just like that. I'm out. But I don't hear Newt's voice asking me to wake up. I hear a girls voice and she sounds so familiar.
Audrey it's Teresa.
I stop fighting the urge to stay awake and answer Newt.
Audrey you have to become a runner! Teresa spoke softly. It's all apart of WIDKED's plan. Audrey WICKED is good and you need to do this!
Do what?
"Audrey." Newt shakes me.
I move slightly, starring at Newt our eyes locked.
"Audrey your heart stopped for a second!" He hugs me, he is hugging me. "I thought we lost you, I thought I lost you."
