Waking up the next day made every muscle in her body ache! She stared at the ceiling with dull eyes waiting for the energy to come back to her. It didn't and so she sat up and got to work making herself look better.
After a half hour of makeup, hair straightener, and getting dressed she was ready and then she looked at the clock. . .
Her mother was in the living room on the couch, snoring and grunting like a dog in heat. Lily sighed and strode forward determined to wake her mom.
When she grabbed a hold of her mothers large sweatshirt and she didn't even see the fist coming.
"Oh my god, Lily! Are you ok?"
Lily put a hand to her cheek feeling the throb as her nose trickled with blood. She let her fingers probe her lip and felt the indent of a split. Yay. .
"Yeah, all good." She swallowed the blood in her mouth and cringed, yeah blood tasted like metal for sure.
"I'm sorry. Here let me get ready for work, we'll leave early and I'll buy you an ice cream." Lily nodded and sighed.
Forty minutes later Lily held onto the handle of the car as they sped down the highway, breaking the every law in the book. "We're running late." Her mom said into the phone. "Yeah. I know." She took a side glance at Lily. "She'll understand. She has her permit." Lily groaned.
"Yeah we're on our way." The car ride was silent as they sped away.
Work went quick. With only a few mishaps . . .
"What can I get for you this morning?" Lily asked sweetly.
"You have very nice jeans." The oldest man in the group said, slurring.
"Thank you." Lily said politely, rolling her eyes as she listened to the mans daughter smack him.
"You've said that five times already!"
"What would you like?" Lily repeated.
"Hey Bennett! Take a picture of this cute little thing!" The old man stood up and reached over the bar, Lily stepped back but the space was cramped and he grabbed hold of her shirt by her neck. "Show me your titties!"
Lily grabbed the mans wrist and twisted it until he let go right as her mother turned around with the very large meat cutting knife and pointed at him. "That is enough. I am the mother so take your hands and eyes off my daughter."
The man jumped back in his seat as the entire group sat so still for a few heartbeats . . . And then the females clocked him a very good one. There was a group of six females and four males. The males each glared at their group mate in annoyed frustration.
"Lily go to the other end, I have this party." Marie's anger was definitely boiling. Richie Jay walked behind the bar and started serving the party. Rich was an old employee, but he had another full time job next door.
"Marie, let me." He told her, grabbing the old man's drink and dumping it in the sink. "You are cut off." Lily turned back to her job, but she had to go back and when she did the old man touched her rear as she bent over the half wall where the hidden supply of bread was. She sighed and went back to work.
She got clean up and tip duty that day when her mother went to have a cigarette with Richie. She sat down and counted out the tip. She stood in amazement as she pulled out a one hundred dollar bill. That was a drunk ass man. In total they'd made two hundred and three bucks. Definitely a good day. She split the tip even and then took her wage from the register. Forty dollars and then with tip she was doing good. She left the other half of the tip with the jar and then went back to the unnecessary cleaning.
Gary came in soon and Lily handed him the towel. Gary was twenty four, and he was literally the life of the party. Constantly drunk and high but alert enough to work and work well. It had to be a talent, just had to be.
Lily stepped out of the bar and sighed. "Honey go for a walk, Rich and I have some catching up to do."
"Yeah." Lily turned and walked off, heading into the biggest crowd and being swallowed by the sea of people.
She glanced around at the windows and it wasn't a shop that caught her eye. . . a cement staircase and a bridge. She didn't even stop to think, she just took off for it. She stood staring at the flag at the end of the bridge, the scene seemed so tragic. . .
Lily ran for it and she basically jumped the stairs. She walked the path the constructors had made, passing a gazebo and a statue. She took one look at sprinted for the fountain. Little cupids danced on the edge, shooting water into the pool. The goddess in the middle was beautiful. Lily spun in a circle looking at the green leaves that swayed in the gentle breeze. The sun peaked through and warmed her face and she smiled. A twig snapped in the distance and she looked over.
