"Alright, you need to get up." Lily whispered, her eyes slipped over to the stunned body of the janitor before going back to her new charge.
She shook him not so gently before he snapped awake. She stared into the frightened eyes of the poor boy in front of her.
In the space of one breath Lily went from kneeling at the boys side after taking the rope from his wrists to being pinned to the floor, both legs captured by his own larger one. His hand pressed on her throat and she couldn't help but cough and gag under his weight.
"Lily!" She glanced over just in time to see Owen tackle the poor boy to the floor . . . and pin him. Yep that's not going to be easy to break. She rolled to her side and tried to catch her breath as her throat and chest caught fire.
"What were you going to do to her?" Owen demanded.
"The janitor did it, Owen." Lily told him. "He's in a shock or flashback. He didn't mean anything, look at him and tell me he's seeing anything."
"What do you mean the janitor?" Own asked warily. Lily glanced at the closet floor and her mouth opened.
"The janitor is gay, the boy? Not so much. The issue was forced and I happened to be walking along. This is what happened."
"Where is he then?" Lily shrugged.
"Not there anymore." She said, feeling a chill run her spine. She looked back into the dark closet and studied it hard.
In the black of the wall, an older twisted face shaped and a grin spread on his lips. His finger lifted to point at her, and he drew a line across his throat. He disappeared before he reached halfway across his neck, but the message was clear.
"Janitor. Not human either, unless humans can disappear into shadows."
"Demon, I'd bet. Now what do we do with the wiggle worm?"
Lily looked at the frantic boy and sighed. "I always wanted to do this."
She crawled until she was right over him and lifted a palm and swiped it across his face.
He stopped and his head snapped back to her. His eyes narrowed and then widened in recognition. Panic filtered in and then pain. The feelings she knew all too well, unfortunately she didn't have a hero.
"No." She whispered gently. "He didn't."
Heh swallowed and nodded. She looked at Owen and he sighed. "What do you want?"
"Go find a teacher or something. I'll sit with him, ok?"
He swiftly left, and she watched him disappear. "Are you new, or have I just never seen you before?"
"Old student, new hair cut and back from vacation." He whispered. Lily studied him silently. "Lily right? Lily Alexis. School outcast."
"Nice title, I think I'll keep it." Lily said dryly, feeling a little trickle of hurt.
"Why did you come down this way?"
"I dazed off and missed my classroom." She muttered and sighed.
"You ok?"
He looked at her and rolled his eyes. "Fine."
Lily nodded. "Look, it's not cool or easy but it won't stay with you forever, it will just seem like it."
"So tell me, why is life so fucked up? What did I do?"
"Life is full of twists and turns, if you don't enjoy the ride it's just and upward climb. Right now is the climb, but don't dwell, you'll go crazy."
