It's day day after New Year's Day, and school in Forks is about to start back. It'll be Isla Masen's first day. She was in a mental hospital from the age of thirteen until she was seventeen because she has the ability of telepathy, mind reading. When she was seventeen, she was sent to her aunt's house in La Push. Being the only blonde on the Rez, she was treated like the outcast.
Isla had began getting depressed, she knew she should have let the rude comments go but she couldn't help it. Her own cousin, Paul Lahote, was one of the La Push locals who told her that she never belonged and that she should leave and not come back.
So, that's what she did. On the day of September 13th of 2004, Isla turned eighteen. Thought her aunt begged and pleased for her to ignore Paul and stay, Isla moved out of La Push. She went to Port Angeles until about Christmas and she went to Forks. Isla enrolled herself in Forks High School and requested her records be transferred when she called the high school on the reservation.
When Isla moved into a small house in Forks, she adopted a german shepherd and named him Ronny. Ronny has been fixed when he was a puppy so that he wouldn't be able to breed, but Isla isn't heartbroken over that. She's just happy he's a healthy, and happy dog. He's her best friend.
In order to keep the bills and rent paid for Isla's one bedroom house, she got a job at the local diner as a waitress. Sure, it's part time. But fortunately, the house's landlord is willing to work with Isla because she's still in high school. It relieved some of the stress the eighteen year old felt.
Every morning from the time she got Ronny - which was December 20, 2004, to present - January 2, 2005 - walking him around her block. She lives right beside Chief of police, Charlie Swan. He lives alone but he'll have his buddy and his son over. Isla recognized them as Billy and Jacob Black, two of the reservation locals who accepted Isla despite her being pale skinned, blonde, and blue eyed.
Isla returns to her house after walking Ronny around the block, and he barks happily as she goes to unlock the door. Charlie Swan waves over at her as he heads to his police cruiser. Isla waves back as she pushes the door open and unhooks the leash from Ronny's collar, and he bolts inside.
"Be careful out there, Chief!" Isla calls with a grin.
Charlie chuckles when Ronny barks from inside the house. "Sounds like he's waiting... I can watch him while you're in school tomorrow."
"That would be amazing, Chief, thank you," Isla muses. "I better get in here and feed this pig/dog half breed."
Charlie chuckles as he gets into his police cruiser and leaves. Isla watches as the police car disappears up the road and she watches as a beautiful newer model Nissan Altima pas the house in a slow speed. The blonde shrugs and she heads inside, all she sees of Ronny is his wagging tail. She shakes her head in amusement as she heads toward the pantry in the kitchen.
After putting dogfood and water in Ronny's bowls, Isla goes upstairs to wash the sweat of the walk. Sure, it's absolutely freezing it's side, but Ronny likes to walk Isla more than her walking him. The dog has a way of pulling sweat from every pore on Isla's body even when the weather is close to five degrees below freezing.
After a hot shower, Isla dresses in some loose fitting jeans and a mint green T-shirt that is plenty revealing, this is a relaxing outfit for the eighteen year old. With the silence and no large groups of people, Isla happens to relax. She is telepathic, she can read minds. Isla can it control the ability; she hasnt had tie chance to grow contort. As soon as her deceased mother, Rita Morrison, found out - she sent her to a mental hospital.
Large crowds send sends Isla into a panic attack, a huge one. All the mental voices hit her brain at once and she hates not being in control. Her mom always called her crazy and a disgrace and an abomination. Isla never understood her mother's hatred of her. But it was okay. The human telepath is better off without her, even though she does wish Rita were still alive.
Isla opens up a to-go bowl she had in her fridge and sees the chili cheese fries she brought back from work last night. She worked on New Year's Day for extra lay go help her with bills and rent. Isla grabs a plate from one of the cabinets and she puts the fries, chili, and the melted cheese onto the glass plate before placing it into the microwave to reheat her dinner for tonight.
Isla knows how to cook. Anne Lahote taught her what she knew when Isla was growing up... until her mother sent her to the state mental hospital in Seattle, Washington. And then she taught her some more when she moved back at seventeen, and so did Emily Young. Emily and her fiancée, Sam Uley, were fairly accepting of Isla. Sam even defended her to Paul a time or two, which is when Sam gained Isla's respect.
Isla takes her food to the dining table as she ponders over the rumors. Sam is the same age as her, five or take a couple months. He turns nineteen in June or July, while Isla is eighteen until September. People say that Sam is the leader of a gang and there are a couple new ones that he's a drug lord. And Isla believes that's exactly what they are, rumors. She knows dam pretty good, and he doesn't have a mean bone in his body... not that she could see, anyway.
Ronny scratches on the door that leads into the fenced in backyard. Harry Clearwater and Charlie did this for Ronny so that he could potty after eating. That is exactly how Harry worded it. The elders of the reservation were the most loving men Isla knew in La Push. Elder Quil Ateara, Billy Black, Harry Clearwater and his wife, Sue. Those elders, Anne, Sam, Emily, and her ten year old cousin Charlee are the only ones in La Push Isla will miss. She will see Billy and Jacob often but still, it's not the same as daily.
Isla lets Ronny out and she washes up the dishes and she vacuums the floors. She has a queen sized bed calling her name but if she goes to bed without Ronny, the stubborn german shepherd will be mad at her for days.
As soon as Ronny comes back in, Isla locks up her house and she goes up to bed with her doggy best friend.
