Chapter 40

Jasper and Isla are standing several paces behind Edward. Edward and Bella are with Jacob in the center of the field. Edward has decided not to join the vid for... Bella! This irritates Isla beyond recognition but of course, she says nothing to upset her coven until she leaves for Volterra when this is over.

"Your not fighting?" Jacob asks mockingly. "What, you pull a muscle or something?"

"He's doing it for me," Bella says and Isla scoffs. "Okay?"n

Jacob looks at her, and then at Edward, shaking jos head in disdain. "Whatever. Just tell me the plan."

Jasper kisses the back of Isla's hand before stepping forward. "This field will give us an advantage against the newborns. We can lire the newborns here with Bella's scent, but it needs to end here."

"Edward and I are good to a campsite," Bella continues. "But even if he carries me, they'll pick up our scents."

"Your smell, however, is revolting," Edward says and Isla snorts at this.

"Dude, you really don't want to start comparing stinks..."

"He means," Bella cuts in, "your scent will mask mine if you carry..."

"Done," Jacob says before she can finish.

Edward looks at Jasper. "This is a bad idea..."

"Uncle..." Isla speaks up. "They won't want to get anywhere near his... scent. Why do you think Jas sent me to La Push when James was at large?"

"Let's test it," Bella says.

"Isla, you follow behind them," Jasper instructs as Jacob runs through the trees, carrying Bella. "Check for Bella's scent.,

"Yes, sir," she smirking and she zooms off.

"She is going to be my death," Jasper grumbles and Edward chuckles.

"I can agree with that, she's crazy," Edward muses. "But she's a Cullen. It's worth it." He sighs. "I can't believe she accepted Aro's offer."

"Everyone has been hellbent on Bella; and I mean no offense with that," Jasper says. "She feels... alone and unhappy a lot, because everyone has been putting Bella first. The Volturi want her and she feels like she could finally be of importance, a possible priority."

Isla soon returns and she grins smugly. "All I picked up was wet dog, no Bella. This will work."

"Great," Edward grumbles through gritted teeth.

While her family hunts animals, Isla rushes to Port Angeles instead. She strolls through the darkened streets, seeking out her meal. She sees a man harassing a woman, trying to make a forced move upon her.

"Hello, you," Isla purrs.

The man immediately leaves the woman alone and she runs. "Hello, there."

Isla reaches her hand out. "Come. Let's go into an alley, so we're alone."

The man easily takes her hand and Isla leads him into the nearest, and darkest alley. She takes her jacket off, revealing a showy shirt Rosalie suggested to help her lure in her meals. Rose approves of the human diet for Isla since she is going to be joining the Volturi soon.

The man steps closer to touch Isla but before he can, Isla shoves him agaisnt one of the walls harshly and she sinks her fangs into his jugular, controlling the blood flow. She shakes her head as she deepens her fangs, the man's heart and his breathing slowly comes to a stop. She looks over when she feels a presence and sees Demitri.

"Hey," Isla greets. "Care to help me expose of him?"

Demitri smirks. "I heard nothing you have cocked your acceptance of joining the guard." He walks over slowly as Felix joins. "I cannot wait to be standing by you in that throne room where you belong."

"I actually agree," Felix replies as he lifts the body. "Demitri, hunt with her. Dispose of the bodies well. I shall dispose of him before finding Alec and Jane."

Demitri nods and he walks down the alleyway with Isla, and they emerge into the city for their meals.
