When Callum awoke the following morning, Sam was with them. His apartment had burnt down with his girlfriend inside. She died.
It'd been over a week since then and Sam was still having nightmares. Not that Callum or Dean could blame him. He'd witnessed the love of his life burn to death.
Callum sat in the backseat of the Impala, listening to his dad's music. And then Sam jerked awake, looking around the car.
"You ok?" Dean asked him.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Sam lied.
"You don't look fine, Uncle Sammy." Callum said softly. "I can tell when someone has nightmares. I have them sometimes."
"You wanna drive?" Dean asked his brother, causing him to laugh.
"Dean, your whole life you never once asked me that." Sam told him.
"Just though might want to." Dean told him. "Never mind."
"Can I drive, Daddy?" Callum asked, causing Dean to chuckle.
"Maybe when you're a little older, all right, Caz?" Dean told him.
"Caz?" Callum questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"So, Sammy gets to call you 'Cal' but I don't get to call you 'Caz'?" Dean said, sounding offended.
"I like it." Callum grinned.
"I get that you're worried about me." Sam told Dean, going back to being asked if he wanted to driver. "I get it, and thank you, but I'm perfectly fine."
"Mm-hm." Dean hummed, not believing his younger brother for a second.
Sam grabbed a map, unfolding it as Callum held Cosmo tightly, staring out the window at the fields and trees that they passed, a gentle smile on his face.
"All right, where are we?" Sam asked.
"We are just outside of Grand Junction." Dean told him. Sam folded up the map.
"You know what?" Sam said. "Maybe we shouldn't have left Stanford so soon."
"Sam, we dug around there for a week." Dean told him. "We came up with nothing. If you wanna find the thing that killed Jessica-"
"We gotta find Dad first." Sam said.
"Dad disappearing and this thing showing up again after twenty years, it's no coincidence." Dean said. "Dad will have answers. He'll know what to do."
"It's weird, man." Sam told him. "These coordinates he left us. This Blackwater Ridge."
"What about it?" Dean asked.
"There's nothing there." Sam replied. "It's just woods. Why is he sending us to the middle of nowhere?"
Callum held tightly onto Dean, his arms wrapped around his neck as they looked around the ranger station. Dean carried the young boy over to a picture, pointing at a man standing over a giant, dead bear.
"So, Blackwater Ridge is pretty remote." Sam said as he looked at a 3D model of the forest. "It's cut off by these canyons here, rough terrain, dense forest, abandoned silver and gold mines all over the place."
"Dude, check out the size of this fucking bear." Dean said, having not been paying attention to a word his brother had said.
Sam walked over as Callum rested his head on Dean's shoulder.
