Moyamensing prison. That was the name of the old prison that had once stood next door. It'd been built in 1835 but got torn down in 1963, one hundred and twenty-eight years after it was built.
The most important part? They used to execute people in the field next door, where the apartment building was built.
"A hundred and fifty-seven names?" Sam spoke, looking at the list of all the names on his laptop. Jo had called Ash, telling him to send them a list of every single person who'd been executed in the field. A hundred and fifty-seven people had been executed.
"We've gotta narrow that down." Dean said, standing over Sam's right shoulder with Jo on his left. Callum sat across from them, slightly confused.
"Yeah." Sam agreed.
"Or else we're gonna be digging up a hell of a lot of stiffs." Dean continued.
A moment passed, Sam looking through the names.
"Herman Webster Mudgett?" Sam said.
Callum's eyes widened, immediately recognising the name from a book he'd found in a library just a few months prior. Something he definitely shouldn't have been reading.
"H.H. Holmes!" Callum blurted, causing the adults to look at him. "That was his birth name, right? He changed it so he wouldn't be arrested." The boy recalled, making the adults even more confused. Dean looked at Sam, hoping that he'd say the boy was wrong or something.
"He's right." Sam nodded.
"You gotta be kiddin' me..." Dean said.
After a small internet search, they had all the information they needed about their killer.
"Yep." Dean said. "Holmes was executed at Moyamensing, May seventh, 1896."
"H.H. Holmes himself." Sam said. "Come on, I mean, what are the odds?"
"Who is this guy?" Jo questioned.
"The term 'multi-murderer'. They coined it to describe Holmes." Dean explained. "He was America's first serial killer, before anybody knew what a serial killer was."
"Yeah, he confessed to twenty-seven murders, but some put the death toll at over a hundred." Sam continued.
"He's a scary guy..." Callum mumbled quietly, barely audible.
"And his victim flavor of choice?" Dean said. "Pretty, petite blondes. He, uh, he used chloroform to kill 'em." He was quiet for a moment, a realisation coming to mind. "Which is what I smelled in the hallway last night. At his place, cops found human remains, bone fragments, and long locks of bloody blonde hair."
"Like... what we found in the vent...." Callum spoke, loud than he'd previously spoken.
"Exactly." Dean nodded before turning to Jo. "Boy, you sure know how to pick 'em."
"Well, we just find the bones, salt 'em and burn 'em, right?" Jo said, thinking it would be that simple. Spoiler alert, it wasn't.
Sam was quick to jump in, looking at her as he spoke, "Well, it's not that easy. His body is buried in town, but it's encased in a couple tons of concrete."
"What? Why?" Jo questioned.
"The story goes that he didn't want anybody mutilating his corpse." Dean said. "'Cause, you know, that's what he used to do."
