I drove about an hour to Huntsville, TX to the Estelle Penitentiary for a visit that was long overdue. I had been dreading coming down here to be confronted with the mess I've made, but I needed his advice on how to fix it. After being searched 3 times, paying the guard to make sure it wouldn't be any record or video evidence of my visit, and waiting another hour, I was finally face to face with my dad.
His platinum smile shined bright as his eyes landed on me. I stood up to meet him and he pulled me into a tight embrace. He looked like an older version of my older brother.
"Big Trav what's up!" I greeted him. "Nothing man, working out trying to stay out the way in here. I've been watching your stupid ass on the news. I'm surprised they let you in this bitch."
"I didn't think they would, but I had to try." I chuckled.
Big Travis Jones was a 6'5 315 pound legend in the hood. His fiery red hair matched his temperament. He kept his hair in a clean low cut taper fade. You could see touches of grey mixed into his beard, but he still looked every bit of 30. I've heard so many stories about my Dad growing up I knew I wanted to be just like him. Even though he was a white guy in the hood, he was feared and respected. He's been in prison since I was 14. It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that he would die in here. I respected the fact that he wrote and called us often, and he never missed a holiday sending money and gifts. He's made prison his home and adjusted way better than what he should have. He runs several businesses from inside of here. He had a similar reputation in prison as he had on the outside.
"You and Charlie handling things out there?"
"Shit, trying. It's stressful and everyday something new pops up."
"You and Charlie good though? The divorce is off the table right? Don't be an idiot and fuck that up."
"She's saying it's still on. You know me and her have a loyalty to each other that outweighs everything. I think she's just trying to punish me. The only thing is she's been spending time with some cat from Baltimore. He lives in Atlanta now. She used him to get to his cousin who was a witness. She's been taking him out the of the country with a passport with my name on it so I can handle business here and have an alibi."
"That's smart. I expect that from Charlie though. She's brilliant. What's the issue?"
"I think she actually likes the dude. I know she's fucking him that's a given. You know how women are though. As soon as they get any attention from anyone else, they run with it and make it seem like you're the ultimate bad guy. She's vulnerable because I fucked up. I'm afraid what I did could have cost me her for good. This dude she's been with is a problem."
