Pannacotta Fugo treasure his quiet life more than anything. After graduating from university when he was only sixteen, he decided to settle in a small cottage by the beach in the southern part of Sardinia. The very reason he chooses the deserted place was that he is tired of all the attention he got as a genius. He dislikes it. Thus, he now works as an author of many books. For two years since he graduated, he published five books.
And now Fugo is not alone anymore.
"Oh, you wrote that too?" She rests her chin on her folding arms by the edge of the bathtub, just right beside Fugo's head to see the book he is holding. "Perhaps you're a smart person?"
The honey blond boy chuckles, "You could say that. This one is about a philosophy that I finished last month."
"What is philosophy?"
"It's way to understand knowledge, reality, and existence."
"Sounds hard," She comments plainly, "Tell me everything!" A beam of smile carves on her face while excitedly splashing the salt water with her tails.
Another hour they spend together to read the book Fugo wrote. Fugo will teach her about humans along the way and she will respond with the perspective of merfolk. All while snacking on strawberry.
"You didn't believe merfolk is real?" She gasps, poking at Fugo's cheek repeatedly, "We're neighbors for two years!"
"Normally, human didn't know if they have a merfolk as their neighbor," Fugo take another strawberry, "And no one have concrete evidence of your kind existential."
"Actually, merfolk supposedly to have humans because of their greed behavior. We avoided human when we see them and try not to engage any contact. You're the first human I met and anything you do are all sitting down with those papers things. I judge you won't do me any harm."
"Then why are you acting like you're offended?" Fugo shifts to lean with his side.
"Because we're friends now," Her white teeth showing from the smile, "You're fun and nice. You even bring me the real seawater to this small ship."
"Bathtub,"
"Bathtub," She leans back, showing the plain white shirt she wearing, "This shirt thing is comfortable too."
"Of course, that's cotton," Fugo said confidently, but refuse to tell her that that shirt is his sleepwear, "If you were to show yourself in front of human again, [y/n], please cover your chest."
"Human is weird, why would you need to cover your body?"
"Because some people can be a total jerk. Hating human is the right thing merfolk can do," He explains, "You can keep the shirt if you want."
"Can I? Thank you, Fugo! This matches with my silver tail," She lifts the tip of her tails, showing the almost transparent fins.
Fugo can feel his cheek starting to get hurt. It's only been two days since they meet and he already fulfilling the lack of smiling for two years. He never realizes that companion can be so nice to have.
When the sun almost setting down and shadows getting higher from the windowpane, it's time for Fugo to bring her back to the shore. He regrets not doing any exercise before but for now he can manages to carry her.
"I'll see you tomorrow on the same time when the sun is high," She said, ready to swim back to the deep ocean. "Oh, one more," She turns back, "Make sure you lock your door tonight. Check everything, don't let them in. Stay inside."
Before Fugo could say anything [y/n] swiftly swim back to the ocean. Leaving Fugo with questions for the rest of the night. And on that very night, he heard noises from outside his cottage.
