Over a hundred dwarves trotted out, riding on giant battle rams, and began to march on the elves, causing Thranduil to order his elves to fire on his command.
"Thranduil, this is madness!" Gandalf pushed through the ranks with Agarwaen behind him. Thranduil ignored them and ordered his archers to loose their arrows, which were quick to fill the sky and fly towards the dwarves.
Dain gave an order in khuzdul, and the sound of machinery sounded behind them. Agarwaen watched with wide eyes as giant spinning arrows ascended from behind his ranks and flew right at the assault of arrows, completely demolishing them.
Even though the spinning arrows were aimed at the elven front lines ahead of them, Agarwaen still pulled Bilbo behind her to try and protect the hobbit. Many of the elves fell back and were either injured or killed in the counter attack, but more stepped forward to take their fallen soldiers' places.
"How do you like that, the old twiddly widdlies?" Dain laughed down from the hill as his ram riders continued forwards. "Ya buggers!"
"Leithio!" Thranduil yelled again, and another set of arrows flew, only to be shredded again and the ranks were assaulted for a second time. The archers then fell back as the goats neared, and elves with pikes and shields stepped forward to build a wall, aiming the pikes at the oncoming force.
As much as Agarwaen didn't want to fight, she still drew her sword, knowing that it could very well come to the matter of kill or be killed. The goats leapt into the elven ranks, their riders swinging hammers and axes, easily demolishing the elves as they went. Even though elves were skilled, these elves had not seen war for quite some time, and were no match against hammers that weighed more than they did.
"Whatever happens, Bilbo, stay by me." She yelled over the noise of armor being crushed, hooves stomping, and metal clashing. Looking down, she saw Bilbo nod whilst holding his own little sword, his hands shaking slightly.
It was then that Agarwaen could feel it. The ground shook beneath her feet, and not because of the battle, no. This was coming from the south. She looked in that direction as slowly the noise of battle died down and everyone looked toward where the shaking and new noise was coming from.
When the first creature rose from beneath the ground, she jumped. It was the fabled were-worms; the earth eaters. Two more erupted from the earth, crushing stone in their star-shaped mouths before disappearing back down into the holes they came from.
A horn sounded from atop ravenhill, making Agarwaen turn her gaze in that direction where she found war flags and none other than Azog the Defiler.
Orcs flooded out from the freshly made tunnels, and ran straight for the mountain.
"The hordes of hell are upon us!" She heard Dain yell, leading his ranks away from the elves and to the real battle. "To battle! To battle, sons of Durin!" Agarwaen looked to Thranduil, who just sat upon his elk silently. Elves all around them waited for an order, but he wasn't giving one.
"The elves..." Bilbo started. "Will they not fight?"
"I'm going out there." Agarwaen put on her helmet and was about to push her way past the elven ranks.
"Wait!" Gandalf grabbed her and looked to Thranduil.
"Gurth anin yrch!" The elvenking finally yelled, and the swordsmen charged after the dwarves, who had already built a pike wall against the orcs. They then leapt over the dwarves and charged the orc ranks, slaughtering all in their path before the dwarves joined the fray.
Agarwaen stayed with Gandalf and Bilbo while Thranduil's troops marched forward, feeling like there had to be more to this. Azog wasn't stupid, and one army against three didn't stand very good odds. Her suspicion was confirmed when from atop ravenhill, she heard the orc yell in black speech to attack the city. Her head turned to Dale. That was where all the women and children were.
