I glanced at my phone again for the time before I put on an oven mitt and took the roasted veggies out of the oven. I placed the hot pan on a placemat over the counter, then walked back over to flip the stir-fry I was cooking on the stovetop.

Addison should be arriving in a few minutes after her tennis game, and I knew she'd be exhausted and hungry. I turned the heat off the stovetop once I knew everything was ready, then started to plate the veggies to place them on the kitchen island. I frowned, knowing it probably smelled like oil and food in the house, so I decided to light a few candles.

I glanced down at my t-shirt to make sure I didn't stain it during the cooking process, then I nervously glanced at my phone again. The last text Addison sent to me was her telling me that she was just around the corner, so why hadn't she arrived yet?

Was she okay? I made sure everything was neatly placed on the table before I walked into the living room and towards the window by the front door. As I peeked through the blinds, I jumped a little when my front door abruptly opened. I eased myself when I saw Addison's car in the driveway, but was shocked to see her walk into my house with her phone out in front of her face.

"Hi Melanie!" She blurted out way too loudly as she cheerfully skipped into the house in her tennis outfit, "See, Mom. I'm at her house." She moved her phone around to me then to my living room. I nodded in understanding when I realized that her mother was just making sure she arrived at my house and she wasn't sneaking off anywhere else.

"What is that?" I could hear her mother blurt out through the phone as Addison moved the camera to a random abstract painting by the fireplace.

"Uh, I'm not sure," Addison said as she focused the camera in on the colorful colors.

"How much was that?" Her mother asked while Addison looked over at me and mouthed 'I'm sorry."

I walked by Addison and put my face into view and smiled for Mrs. Cruz, "Hi, Mrs. Cruz, thanks again for agreeing for Addison to come over. I'm not sure how much that was, I think my parents got it a few years back."

I squinted as I looked into the camera, and realized that her mother wasn't even in view. The camera only showed what looked like an empty sink. Her mother probably propped her camera up somewhere and was doing something else farther away.

"You're welcome! Take lots of pictures tomorrow okay!" She said excitedly as she ignored the painting question.

Addison took over, "We will, mom, don't worry." She hesitated, "Is there anything else you need, mom?"

"Oh no, me and your dad are going to go to watch House Hunters now."

"Uh, okay, sounds fun. I'll update you then, mom." Addison looked around and her eyes widened as she saw dinner prepared on the counter. "We're about to eat dinner."

"Okay, what are you two eating?"

I chimed in, "Veggie and tofu stir fry."

"You cooked it?"

"Yes, Mrs. Cruz."

"Wow!" Her head popped into view, except all I could see were her eyebrows and the top of her forehead. "Okay, well, make sure you get things done. Addison, text me when you leave in the morning."

"I will, mom. Bye, love you."

"Love you."

Addison pressed the red end button and sighed in relief. Then, she tossed her phone onto my coffee table before she dropped her duffel bag on the floor. Afterwards, my eyebrows raised in the air as she smirked before she launched herself right at me.
