Somewhere along the journey I fell asleep to wake up five minutes before the journey had ended. The car was driving along a long stretch of someone's drive way. As we grew closer the speck of a house grew bigger and bigger and bigger until it was a full blown mansion. A mansion I knew far too well.
"What are we doing here?" I asked looking between my dad the driver and my brother in the passenger seat calm and with his cool on. Clearly he was on in this set up. "I thought we were going out for dinner."
"We are out and we're going for dinner." My dad said as he stopped the car outside the front door, more like the grand staircase that led to the double oak reinforced doors. The put the break on and the shift stick on neutral and turned to look at me. "Cara, Bar-Bill-Evelyn's father invited us to join them at dinner."
"Bill," I echoed."This place belongs to the alpha," I argued.
"It does, they're having their first formal family dinner."
"How can we be invited if this is a family affair?"
"Finn invited Zak and Bill invited me and my family so here we are."
Zak had muttered something under his breath that I didn't quiet catch but dad sure did.
"She's invited on my behalf," dad muttered back not so discreetly.
"Now honey, just smile and make polite conversation and you should sail through the night should."
The valet opened my side door, helping me out and handing me over to Zak who escorted me up the stairs and into the house.
"Mr Mortimer," the butler bowed greeting my father and us and lead the way.
I fell slightly behind as I followed after them struggling to keep up. We were led to the dining room, where a magnificent wooden table usually sat untouched, today it was fulfilling its duties.
It seemed as if time had stopped as all eyes landed on us. I could feel all their gazes on me taking in my bump. Along the table people were already seated. At the head of the table was the Alpha Archer and on his right was his wife and on his left was his son Finn.
"Glad you could all make it," the alpha beamed but something told me it was all but sincere as his linger more on my bump than anywhere else.
I cautiously walked getting closer to the table, it seemed that we had been assigned our seats. Mine was next to Rhys' mum I didn't know how I felt about that, I hadn't exactly spoke to her after the break up, neither had I spoken to the alpha but he hasn't been too keen on me since the false alarm death scare and the revelation of my pregnancy.
"Here," my dad said pulling out my chair.
"Thanks," I mumbled taking my seat.
I sat awkwardly at the table, as I watched everyone socializing and talking amongst themselves. I watched closely as my father conversed with Evelyn's father oh so freely as if they had know each other for years.
I made accidental eye contact with Finn, which turned into a mini starring contest as both of us were refusing to look away first. His straight face slowly turned to a triumphant smirk. My eyes narrowed as I began to glare at him, his smile didn't falter.
"The starter is served." Someone called breaking up the staring contest. I looked down as the plate was being placed in front of me. It looked like some sort of grilled produce.
"Grilled Salmon with balsamic onion glaze."
I cringed hearing what I was given to eat, as nice as it looked I was allergic to this. I wanted to say something but felt as if I was being bothersome just by being here. Everyone were already digging into their food as I looked around the table, and hesitantly raised my fork.
"You idiot!" Someone shouted in a hushed voice.
"Miss Cara," the same voice grew louder, I turned around to see Oliver the elder head chef. "This is for you," he said replacing the salmon with kebabs.
"Thank you," I turned to face him.
"Oh yeah, you're allergic to salmon," Finn said as if he just remembered, giving everyone an explanation.
The night continued without much fault the main course was lovely and now dessert was about to be served. Evelyn's father's gaze often travelled my way lingering as he watched me every now and then. I could feel his heavy stare on me and it wasn't just in my head, I actually caught him in the act a few time.
"Sorry I'm late," said the late comer.
"Max," the alpha let out a hearty chuckle. "I was beginning to think you weren't going to be able to make it."
"Work took longer than expected." He said. The empty seat in front of me was now occupied.
I looked down the table to Evelyn's family, how lovely there was two girls and two boys. I could feel the stare weigh down on me, making me uncomfortable even though I wasn't even look at them. I finally look straight ahead of me to find Mac sitting there furious as he starred me down. If only looks could kill.
"Max?" I echoed he told me his name was Mac. I stared at him frowning as anger bubbled inside.
"You," he whispered loud enough for me to hear but I could guarantee that everyone heard and was listening to this. "What are you doing here?" His eyes were blazing.
I stared at him dumbfounded, how dare he ask me what I was doing here, I had every right to be here just he had. "I have every right to be here," I snapped standing up I wasn't going to take this.
"You're everywhere I go!"
"I wouldn't be here if I had it my way."
"Why are you everywhere I go?"
"If you don't want to see me, then go back to where you came from!" I told him pushing my chair back. "If I could I would, but I can't so I shan't."
"How can you even be here, you're Human." He growled.
"Well, my father invited me to dinner, little did I know it was an extended invite to hang out with people from the bottom of my priority list." I said bluntly because it was true and I'd rather have that out in the open than bottled up.
"You're father? He scoffed.
"Son," Mac or should I say Max' father said. "This is the girl?" He said putting two and two together.
"Yeah," he muttered.
I turned to my father, "thanks dad." I began bitterly. "Next time family dinner should be without the extras."
My dad shot up out of his chair starring down at the two men. "My daughter?" He said in disbelief. "My daughter!"
I guess Evelyn's dad told him that Mac knocked someone up. "It was a pleasure sitting in silence eating my meals feeling as if I was being suffocated, thank you for the company." I said politely looking around the table. "No offense to what I said but then again take offense I don't care. It's been a pleasure." I told them making eye contact with each and every individual there.
"Dad," I addressed him singling him out. "I'll see you at home."
I had no plans to go home.
