"He-"
"Say it." The feeling of a sharp elbow digs itself into me, nudging me as a way to suggest.
"Hello-" I try to start again, staring at the two ladies in front of me with hands grasping each other. His body presses itself against me like a wall for my stability.
"Say it." He whispers into my ear, giving me another poke with the tip of his index finger this time.
"Annyeonghasaeyo." I bow my head at the two ladies, holding back my desire to smirk and slap the dumbass standing behind me.
Mrs Chi's lip curls up into a smile of gratitude, as does my mother's... which if I must say is something you don't see often. However, as for Mrs Chi, her smile seems to look somehow more genuine than the last I had received. Before it looked forced and kind of restricted, as if she wasn't supposed to show any sort of joy or happiness with a black family when around her own.
"I see Adrian's been teaching you some Korean." She chuckles, looking between the two of us.
I glance up at his smirking face, then back at Mrs Chi. How can this guy act as if he's the main reason I know some phrases... he's a joker guy!
"I had to beg him to teach me." I giggle back.
He pinches my lower back, forcing me to hold back my squirm.
"She hasn't taught me any Yoruba phrases yet, even though I begged her." He sighs, looking morose.
Does he want... pity?
"Fav, why didn't you teach him?" My mother gasps, as if I'm disowning her in front of a live audience.
"He was more interested in eating jollof rice." I shrug.
"Ah, I used to love it when your mother made it for the two of us back in high school." Mrs Chi turns her head to the side, clearly remembering the memories of the past.
The four of us move into the lounge to talk about general life situations. Sounds weird? Yeah, I guess it does. What else can I say though, I expected they were coming over to actually talk about the leave. After all, we're leaving in the in just over 24 hours... to live thousands of miles away. Just saying it, sounds like a dream. Is it truly a reality...
"Ma, I'm going to miss you." I squeeze her hand, from across the coffee table. As much as she may lie and act spiteful towards me, she's still the same woman who raised me. She didn't have to look after me, but she chose to. She brought me into this world and I can only be grateful.
"You must call me everyday."
"I will." I nod.
"I also want to see good grades at university." She preaches.
"Same goes for you, Adrian." His mother adds in. The two of us exchange looks, trying to understand what exactly they're saying.
"University?" He questions.
"Because of the short notice, we haven't been able to enrol you into any top tier schools like oxford or Cambridge. So you will attend Nottingham university in England. When you arrive at the airport, someone will be there to help you with your cars, they'll be shipped over separately. And the apartment address will be in the email we've sent."
Oh.
OH.
I thought we'd only get the privilege of staying in a small apartment, not university. Yes, I had believed that moving away would crush any wish of a degree.
"Wow, thank you." Adrian bows at the two ladies across from us.
"Thank you so much." I gasp, beaming.
