It was going to be another long day for you.
You groaned in annoyance as you got up from your bed. As much as you would prefer to continue to work on your research, you had duties to fulfill.
Just a few weeks ago someone managed to break into your penthouse and steal some valuables from you, nothing too trivial of course, but it still unnerved you to think that someone could just get into your home. His quirk allowed him to walk through glass or something, which your bodyguard should have noticed, after all you hired him because he could detect quirks in the first place.
Long story short, the burglar managed to escape successfully, you fired your bodyguard and started working on devices that would disable quirks within the vicinity of your home. Being quirkless, you had to protect yourself somehow and inventing stuff had always been your feat. In your experience, machines have always proven themselves more useful than people.
You tried turning on one of the devices and there was a quick commotion in the lower levels of the complex so you assumed it worked but turned it off right away to avoid attracting suspicion. You would have to test all of them some other time when not so many people were around...
But right now, there was no time to work on it as you had a bunch of meetings and after that, you were to attend a workshop along with some heroes for the whole day, discussing support items and how technology helps heroes in fighting against villains. Many kids and youngsters would be present so you had to fake your prettiest smile and ramble your best speech about how your company would support heroes and shape a better future and more yadda yadda.
It was certainly supposed to be meaningful but was exhausting at the same time to deal with all these people and pretend you were oh so charming. The things you had to do to remain in your position but in the end, it was all worth it.
The work shop ended in the evening and after being congratulated by some of the heroes and other attendees, you could finally go home and get some peace and quiet.
As you drove to your personal parking lot beneath the complex, you noticed a suspicious fancy black car parked there as well. You pulled over and walked towards the door that would lead you to your personal elevator. Something was off. Did someone actually manage to bypass the security you had installed? You checked your phone but there was no notification.
Anxiety filled you as you stepped inside the elevator, ascending to your penthouse. As the elevator opened you noticed that your front door was left ajar. Someone broke in again, even with your new device running.
Before you could plan your next move, you heard a soft click right next to your ear. A gun was pointing at your head, held by a man wearing a full-face plague doctor mask and a white cape.
"(Y/n). What a surprise to find out you were behind this device."
"Do I know you?"
"No, you don't but that doesn't matter. Last night, there was something that disrupted everyone's quirks within this building for a few seconds. That was you, wasn't it?"
"Why are you so interested in that?"
"My boss has interest in anything that can erase quirks."
"And who might that be?"
"Do you really think you're in the position to ask questions?" He cocked the gun closer to your head. You narrowed your eyes at him but you couldn't even make out his eyes with that mask. "We decided to investigate this phenomenon and saw the tower in your house, that is the device, am I correct?"
"Yes."
"The device is switched off but we still can't use our quirks. Why is that?"
"There are two smaller devices that are still activated."
"Show us." He gestured for you to walk ahead, the gun remaining pointed at you. It irritated you not to know who was behind this scheme and you didn't want them to just take your devices like that after weeks of hard work. But if they were really that interested in your device, you could perhaps bargain and sell it to them. It was still a prototype after all, and you could offer to improve it.
Inside the house was another guy with a plague mask and a hat, pointing a gun at your assistant droid Ada, while your other bots continued cleaning your house without a care.
"Ma'am, this man threatened to shoot me if I notified you about the security breach. I apologize for my failure, but shooting me could enter my system into emergency mode and alert-"
"It's fine." You hushed her.
"So this is the creator, Chrono? Have you ran a background check?"
"Don't you recognize her, Nemu? This is the CEO of (y/c). "
"I see... then she would be very valuable to our boss."
"If your boss was so interested, he should have come here himself."
"Don't speak that way about the great leader of the Shie Hassaikai. "
Shie Hassaikai? They were yakuza?!
Just what had you gotten yourself into? All you wanted was to stop people from breaking into your house and now you had gotten the attention of the yakuza. Unbelievable.
But the yakuza were also quite resourceful, if you could sell these devices to them...
The guy named Chrono ushered you to hurry and you lead them to the two other devices and switched them off.
"Did you create these devices by yourself?"
"Yes." Your mouth spoke before you had the chance to process it. Was this his quirk?
"It appears that our quirks are active again."
"Is this a product you're planning to sell from your company?"
"No, this is my own personal research." Your mouth answered on your own again. So this guy's quirk can force you to tell the truth. How annoying...
"What is the purpose of this research?"
"It is to prevent burglars from breaking into my home." Crap, if he asked more sensitive questions, you could be in big trouble.
"Our boss has goals that are much greater than your feeble needs and he will have much greater use for this than you."
"Wait, you can't just take that."
"What will you do? Fight us for it?"
"Suppose you take this back with you. Do you know to operate it? Replicate it? Where to find the materials for this?" You would not be left empty-handed. "Your engineers would still have to study this while I have all the research and parts readily available if he decided to buy them from me."
"Typical greed of businessmen. Don't think our boss would waste-"
Chrono held out his hand to stop Nemu. "Let's ask the boss first."
"I don't think he would agree."
Chrono already dialed his boss' number and walked out of the room as he told him about their findings, that you were behind it until you could no longer hear him.
"Tell me, what are you trying to gain from all of this?" He used his quirk again.
"Profit."
"Hmph. Should have expected that."
Chrono finally entered the room again. "The boss has agreed to hear your offer. He would like you to show him and thoroughly explain to him how your device works. He's expecting us to take you to the compound as we speak."
This greatly surprised you but you would gladly take the opportunity.
"I'll get ready then."
