Chapter Thirteen: The History Of Arcani
“Where did all these people come from?” I looked around amazing at the sheer multitude that stood before me smiling and laughing at me. “Come on! I will explain as we walk. We have to get started; you will have time to socialise later.” I did as he wished. I didn’t know what to say, I thought he was crazy but now I looked bizarre. “You are shocked by my people; did you think I was lying when I said I am the chief of the village?” I looked down. “Do not worry, this is not the first time,” he chuckled. “The village was once part of a bigger city, one day one of the creatures attacked the city. Our ancestors were great; they called on a great creature. Arcani, the Celestial Dragon. She protected the city for centuries until one day a great power came and destroyed our people; the great dragon used all her power to protect us. Because of her, some of us survived and ran away to start life anew somewhere else. She used so much of her power that her physical body turned to stone, her spirit is said to wander still but she cannot return to her body until a miracle occurs.” A faint wind gently whistled through the trees.“Our village has been attacked multiple times but we no longer have her protection so people go missing every day, it’s only a matter of time before we are...” A dull silence echoed in the trees.
“We named our village after her in memory of her sacrifice. Her statue is where we are heading to, the land surrounding it is sacred and I’m sure it will bring you good luck.” As we walked, I could sense the life around us, I could hear the breeze in the trees and the sounds of animals far and wide. I could sense the organisms beneath my feet and I could feel the rays of the sunshine on my skin. “What’s going on? I feel like everything is watching me.” I ran forward and walked next to Maya, I could also feel the presence of danger. “Calm down! It’s natural, you were already connected to your surrounding but the clothes you’re wearing are enhancing your awareness. The energy flowing through these grounds are so powerful that even you, a rookie with no weapon or power can feel it.” He looked at me and chuckled. “We are almost there.”
We came across patch of earth that had no trees; instead there was a stone tablet in the shape of a circle with the diameter of roughly 5 meters. “Sit down,” Maya ordered, “I want you to sit there and listen to the world around you, really connect with it.” I had no idea what he was talking about and how I was going to ‘connect’ with my surrounding but he didn’t look like he was in the mood for answering back. I sat down in the middle of the tablet and closed my eyes. I wasn’t sure what I was doing but in movies the main character sometimes has to do mystical things like meditate. I took a deep breath and exhaled. “Listen to the trees,” Maya whispered, “empty your mind and lose yourself.” It was quiet. I was going so whisper Maya to see if he was there but I knew that if I did I would lose focus and he would get agitated. I meditated on the words he said and took another deep breath. This time I held it, I didn’t know why but it just felt right. To my surprise I was able to hold it for a long time. I didn’t feel the urge to take another; it was as if I was breathing through the life around me. I was connected.
After this realisation I knew what to do, I understood what Maya meant by ‘listen to the trees’ I could hear them whispering, I could feel their movement. I focused even more, I wanted to test my abilities and see just how far I could push myself. I could sense the animals around, they were quite far away but I knew they were there. I focused on a flower and a creature near-by and somehow I could see them. I could actually see the animal through the perspective of the flower. For now this was the full extent of my potential. I opened my eyes and smiled. “Maya, I did it,” I looked around me, but Maya was gone.
