Chapter Sixteen: A False Miracle!
Finally I could see the tablet! I reached out but it was only a tablet, there was no statue, just a slab of stone on the floor. Was it all in my head? I risked a lot to get there and all I had achieved was this. The earthquake strengthened. “No! No! I’m not going to accept this, I ran with all my might and more to get here. I will not accept this.” I could sense Maya looking at me. I turned my head and faced him, a tear trickling down my face. “I thought I’d finally done something great.” He slowly walked towards me and held my hand,” It’s ok, you did great, I saw everything.” His voice was soft and reassuring. He pulled me up to my feet and we walked back to the village. All the villagers were going back to their huts. It was finally getting dark, I was starting to think there was no night here but again I was wrong. The little girl that hugged me before ran towards me and smiled, I wanted to smile back but I couldn’t find the strength to do so.We went back into the hut then sat down to have something to eat. I had boar hind which was surprisingly tasty, Maya cooked it himself. The little girl ate with us too. Turns out she was ‘actually’ Maya’s daughter her name was Mayamiko. I was also introduced to Maya’s wife, Sarah. He was a short woman but still taller than Maya. She had luscious red hear and green eyes. The green eyes seemed to be a village thing. She was always happy and smiling, a quiet yet strong looking woman.
Maya showed me to the room I was in before, he told me that great people trip up before they become great, but that still didn’t make me feel better. I was brave and I gave my all, but I still failed, if that didn’t prove the fact that I was a failure then what did.
