Phil
"Mr. Connor, may I ask you a favor?" The rookie, Jenkins, approached Phil as he just got out of the "living hell" deemed by most in the office -- Chloe Pike's current office.
Phil asked, "What is it?"
"Please give these to Miss Pike, I'm not sure if I can go and give them to her," Jenkins scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.
"No, you gotta learn to face people like her. You're a big boy," Phil patted his shoulder, then walked past him, shaking his head. He knew that rookie has a potential, he was once a rookie too and he can also attain what Phil got -- a nice house in Philadelphia, a starting company with his father, and a complicated relationship with his boss. Exclude the last one, it was his fault, he was an asshole to Chloe Pike.
He remembered the paradox Chloe told him when they were still in college. "You are free to choose, but you're not free from the consequences of your choice." He chose to leave her without a decent explanation, and now he's getting the cruel treatment from the 'total bitch' dubbed by his officemates.
Then another approached him, "Mr. Connor, would you like to have some coffee?" A young red-haired lady smiled seductively at him.
Phil immediately read her intention; he raised his hand an continued to walk, "Not interested."
And another, "Did she fire you?" Paula, the nosy secretary, asked.
He pursed his lips, shaking his head then finally reached his office then locked the door. Privacy was something he yearned at this moment. Locked in his thoughts about Chloe, it was slowly making him dreadful. Guilt and anger to himself were formed as he wondered what happened to her.
Three weeks later.
Phil missed the "total bitch", Chloe Pike. He stayed in New York, monitoring every meeting and major transactions for Chloe as she was away.Chloe went to different countries in Asia for two weeks, and this week she just returned.
Monday was a damned day for her because she spontaneously went to Canada to fix a problem there. Tuesday until Thursday gave her an opportunity to handle business in Chicago and attend charity balls and soirees. It was Friday when she finally returned to the office. She wasn't talking to him personally and decided to communicate through e-mails or text messages. She never bothered to call to further elaborate some instructions or clarify something. After being strictly professional with Chloe Pike, it was hard for him not to care for her in a different manner. As much as he wanted to accompany her to every event she's attending, he couldn't simply because she had one of Teddy's model friends as her escort. He spent most of his free time at the bar across her apartment, still waiting for the hour that she would call him and be with her 'til morning struck New York.
"Hello New Face," Helga the bartender greeted him cheerfully as she handed him a glass of the scotch he previously ordered the first time he went in this bar.
"I've been a regular customer for three weeks so I'm no longer 'New Face'," Phil tried to smile at Helga to conceal the fact that he has been drinking because of Chloe. The fact that she's been hanging with random people and her damn escorts were killing him. He yearned to know every person she encountered, if she ate on time, if she's not sick, and if she's okay. He asked Helga to divert his attention, "How was your honeymoon?"
