Bella raked the point of the shard up her arms, yanking her thick sweater back to expose the skin, and then pressed the sharp tip to the crease at her elbow. She already had a long scar there from her last birthday. That night, her flowing blood had been enough to catch every vampire's attention, to freeze them all in place for an instant. She prayed it would work that way again. She steeled herself and ducked in one deep breath.
Victoria was distracted from the sound of Bella's gasp. Her eyes, holding still for one tiny portion of a second, met Bella's. Fury and curiosity mingled strangely in her expression.
Bella wasn't sure how she heard the low sound with all the other noises echoing off the stone wall and hammering inside her head. Bella's own heartbeat should have been enough to drown it out. but, in the split second that she stared into Victoria's eyes, she thought she head a familiar, exasperated sigh.
In that same short second, Adelyn flings herself to get a leverage. She holds her legs tightly chaining Riley's neck giving enough time to let Seth run forwards and pounce on him and cracks Riley's torso. Adelyn goes forward and breaks Riley's neck.
Victoria was distracted as Edward sped towards her and something small and white whistled through the air and collided with her mid-flight. The impact sounded like an explosion, and it threw her against another tree--- this one snapped in half. She landed on her feet again. relief swelled in Bella's heart when she saw that Edward stood straight and perfect.
Victoria kicked something aside with a flick of her bare foot ----- the missile that had crippled her attack. It rolled toward Bella, and she realized what it was Riley's head.
Bella's stomach lurched to see his head.
Adelyn was now with Edward. They were close to each other. These little things Bella now notices. Both Adelyn and Edward never left each other's for longer than a hour. They always stay close. Bella wondered how she knew they were in trouble before Alice knew.
No said Edward crooned, his voice seductive. Stay just a little longer.
She wheeled and flew toward the refuge of the forest like an arrow from a bow.
But Edward was faster ------ a bullet from a gun. He caught her unprotected back at the edge of the trees and, with one last, simple step, the dance was over.
Edward's mouth brushed once across her neck, like a caress. Adelyn turned to look at Seth as h moved closer towards Bella. She bolted and then a moment later a squealing sound covered every other noise, so there was no discernible sound to make the image of violence.
And them the fiery tangle of hair was no longer connected to the rest of her body. The shivering orange waves fell to the ground, and bounced once before rolling toward the trees.
Edward was in motion again. Swift and coolly businesslike, he dismembered the headless corpse.
Bella could not go to him ---- she could not make her feet respond; they were bolted to the stone beneath them. But she scrutinized his every action minutely, looking for any evidence that he had been harmed. Her heart slowed to a healthier rhythm when she found nothing. He was graceful as ever, she couldn't even see a tear in his clothes.
Seth......get every piece, you can find and pile it with Edward. I've to go said Adelyn.
A smile flickered across Edward's tense face.
Adelyn stretched out her arm, her hand curled into a fist. Seth grinned, revealing the long row of dagger teeth, and bumped his nose against Adelyn's hand.
She moved and punched Edward's shoulders and kissed his cheeks.
Cut it out, you're embarrassing me, said Edward as he shoved his sister who dodged it as she moved closer to Bella.
