LUKE

Last night at Luke's house.

This party was surely the best I ever had. After this, I'm sure I'll go down in Sylvan High history for throwing the best parties.

Me and my friends had left the main party hours ago and came to the basement. Most of us were drunk over our heads. Jenna wouldn't stop yelling about how much she hated Vixen.

I mean, Jenna was nice and all, but cheerleader was just not my type.

My phone vibrated, and I picked it up for the first time all night. There was a message notification, so I pressed on it to see who it was.
I had to read it like three times before I believed it.

📬Message from Vixen

I opened it and read it:
We need to talk. Meet me out back in five.

I looked around and made sure no one saw me leave. I went upstairs and through the front door to meet up with Vixen.
She was standing in the my backyard, just as she said in the text.

She was wearing a black leather jacket and a tight black crop top. She had a black miniskirt beneath it with high black boots. Her curly dark hair was held back with a black headband.

I was kind of surprised by her look. Vixen wasn't a saint, and she usually showed some skin, but she wasn't a goth girl either. She normally wore brighter colours.

"Why are you dressed like you're going to rob a bank?" I asked her before she could say anything.
She just glared at me without saying anything.
"I didn't come here for you to criticize me," she said coldly.

"Then why are you here?"
"Just to tell you that you should watch your back," she replied.
"Huh?" I said, confused.
"There's someone after you," she continued in a serious and urgent tone. But her tone wasn't serious enough to convince me.

"Really Vix, you came here to threaten me?" I shook my head in disbelief.
"Luke, get over yourself! You're not worth my time anyway!" she exasperated.
She got closer and looked me in the eyes.

"Look Luke, for the sake of what we once had, listen to me! You are in big. Trouble."

"I don't believe you," I said, still shaking my head. "Luke?" a girl called from the main house. I didn't want anyone to see Vixen here. I pulled her into the shadows.

"Look Vixen, before you get me into trouble with my girlfriend, just leave."
Vixen stared at me in shock.

I knew saying that would hurt her, but I just didn't feel like seeing her anymore. I thought she came here to apologize for what she did to Jenna. That's all I wanted her to do, and then maybe I would give 'us' a second chance.

But it seems that Vixen's pride just won't let her admit her faults. It made me angry she was here threatening me or something.

"Fine," she said finally, tears filling her eyes, "I'll go. I just hope that when you realize you should have believed me," she put her hand on my shoulder, "it won't be too late."

I started feeling bad for hurting her. I wanted to say sorry, but she ran off before I could say anything else.

The next time I saw her, she was a corpse in my backyard.

Yesterday, in a forensics lab.

I loved my job. People might think it's weird to like working with dead bodies of victims of unspeakable crimes, but I thought it was awesome.

I felt like I was part of something important here. My analysis on a body helps catch criminals of all kinds. I made me feel like I was doing my part to make the world a safer place for everyone.
