LUKE

Today was Monday, and even though I would have rather stayed in bed until tomorrow, I got up and got ready for school.

I pulled up my car in Sylvan High's large parking lot. I killed the engine and sat there for a while, watching all the bustling activity happening at the school's entrance.

Jocks high-fiving each other. Girls sashaying and catching up on the latest gossip. Bullies ganging up on some nerds in the corners. And the others who seemed invisible to all the activities going on, walking straight to class with no interruptions.

I never noticed the invisible people. I was a popular, cool, and cute guy.

But today I saw them, and I realized how much they mattered. Everyone mattered.
Life wouldn't be without them. They filled the seats in the class. They sit in front so you can hide from the hard questions the teacher asks. They make the special ones stand out. Because if we were all special and cool, what would make us popular kids unique?

I learnt the hard way that life is too short to compete in a never ending popularity contest. I lost one of my best friends to learn that lesson.

I got out of my car and headed straight to class. Just like the invisible ones.

JENNA

I walked through the hallways in a hurry. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, and it wasn't a good feeling. I got to my locker and took my books for my first class.

"Hey Jen," my friend, Lisa, greeted. I smiled back at her. We always met at my locker before class, and I was happy she didn't abandon me for what happened.

We walked off to class together.
"So, now give me the details. What happened after they took you?" Lisa asked.
"Nothing really," I answered her. "I was innocent. Lynn Kent came to prove that so–"

"Wait, what?" Lisa interrupted, "Lynn Kent was your alibi?"
I nodded.
"Wow. I thought the Kents hated you!"
"Me too," I said as we entered our Social Studies class. "I guess her personal vendetta is against The Phantom and not me."

I could still feel people's stares as we climbed up to our row and sat down. We were early, so we continued our conversation.
"Weird he killed two girls form the same family, huh?" Lisa said.

"What's weird about it?" I asked.

"Seriously Jen? Put on your detective hat! The Phantom has never done that before! Why should he start now? And why the Kents?"

I shrugged at her. My eyes fell on an empty seat in the class. It was Vixen's desk. I was happy she wasn't here, but she didn't deserve that vicious death. My mind wandered off to all the terrible fights we had. Lisa just talked on and on about crime stuff. She watches too many cop shows.

The teacher came in and my mind came back to the present.

Lisa was still talking, "I just hope The Phantom's caught before it's too late for all of us."

LYNN

It was so hard to concentrate at school today. All my friends kept asking if I was okay, and it was driving me crazy. Even the teachers were giving me sympathetic looks.

By lunch, I just couldn't take it anymore. I went to the bathrooms and decided to hide there till lunch was over.

I was hoping for a bit of peace there, but standing in front of the mirrors was Jenna and musketeers.
I made a quick U-turn the second  I saw them.

"No, Lynn wait," Jenna called out. I came to a halt in the doorway.

"What now, Jenna? You're going to pester me the way you did with Vixen?" I assumed. She shook her head.
"No, I just wanted to say thanks again for what you did on Friday," she said bashfully. "I'm really sorry for all that I did to you both."

"Well, I got the smaller part of your disturbances," I told her bitterly. "The one you should apologize to is my sister. But of course it's too late now." I folded my hand across my chest.
She just bowed her head sadly. "I know," she said quietly.

"So why don't you tell the truth?" I fired at her. "You know that Vixen wasn't high the day she beat you and your posse here to a pulp! Why don't you just tell everyone!"

"I can't do that," she wailed.
"Why not?"
"I'll get expelled! My rep will be ruined!"

I wasn't very shocked by her answer. Just when I thought she turned over a new leaf.

I shook my head. "You'll never change, Jenna Byers," I said hurtfully, and I left them bathroom.

I just wanted ten minutes for myself, and that's what I got.

JENNA

I tried to go after her, but my friends held me back.
"Don't mind her, Jenna, she's just full of herself," Lisa droned.
"Yeah, forget her," another said.

But I felt so sorry for what I said. My reputation was important, but not more than my clear conscience. And I needed that so badly. I just can't sleep anymore.

But at the same time I knew that I just can't bear joining the list of nerds and nobodies at school.
So once again, I chose my reputation.

We left the restroom. I picked up a banana from the cafeteria on my way back to class. I had biology next. I wanted to get there early because we had a quiz today and I didn't want to fail. I doubled my steps.

"Hey Miss Byers!" I heard a man yell behind me. I turned around to face him. My heart sunk.

It was those officers again. I felt like running, but the fear stopped me in my tracks. The officers approached me slowly.
"You need to come with us," Officer Hunt said firmly. He had bags under his eyes and a deep frown in his face. He's not in a good mood.

By this time, some kids had gathered in the halls behind the officers with some teachers. They were all murmuring to themselves. It felt like Friday again.

My eyes met Luke's and Lynn's. They were standing side by side with their arms folded. Luke gave me a disapproving look and shook his head. Lynn had 'it's serves you right' written all over her face.

Oh no, please tell me he didn't.
But it was obvious what they did. Luke told the police about what happened in his backyard. And it seemed like Lynn was in on it.
I was so screwed.

Officer Jack put his hand on my shoulder and led me through the crowd of students. This time I don't think I'll be out as fast.
