CALLA

"Come in!" I said warmly. I was trying to sound warm. Inside I was freaking out.
I led them to my dining room

"So you live alone here?" The officer asked. I knew this guy very well. He was on the news all the time giving updates about Vixen's case. He was Officer Hunt.

"Yes I do," I replied.
"How old are you?" The other officer asked. "I'm eighteen," I lied.
They both looked at me doubtfully. "We'll need some form of ID please."
"Okay, I'll go get it."

I ran up the stairs and took my fake ID. I was seventeen truly, but they couldn't know that.

"Here you are, my health insurance card." I handed the card to them. They scrutinized it for a while, and gave it back.
"Well you're kinda small for a eighteen year old," the other officer, Officer Jack, said with a tight smile.

"Believe me, I get that a lot," I laughed. I put down the card.
"So … what do you want to know from me? I'm just a neighbour."

"We just came to ask you some questions," Hunt said.
"Two people we interrogated about this case told us they met you, and you told them where Vixen's hideout was. Is that true?"

"Yes," I answered, "I saw them. They came looking for Vixen and I told them she wasn't there."

"How did you find out about the hideout?" Officer Jack asked.
"Um, you see, I moved here not to long ago, and I don't really have any friends. I'm homeschooled," I explained.
"So when I heard about how prestigious my neighbours were I decided to learn a little more about them."

My mind went back to the first time I spied on the Kents. Of course I had to lie and leave out some details to keep myself safe.

Three weeks ago, in their neighborhood

CALLA

Today my new neighbours are having a barbecue. It was just their family. They looked so happy. But I noticed one daughter was missing.

It was the troublesome one. I think her names Vixen. Who names their child after a fox?
I know her mom is a famous explorer, just like mine, so maybe that justifies it.

I saw her leave and walk away from her house. This was the third time this week. Where does she go?
Did she have a secret?

Present day

"I thought maybe she sneaks out to meet her boyfriend or something," I told the officers. "And since I was so curious, I decided to follow her."

"So I followed her all the way to that house, making sure I wasn't seen. She'd go in there for hours and no one was ever there with her. She comes out with nothing."

"I just didn't get," I said, trying to look like I was puzzled. "I figured she goes there when she's tired of being with her family."

"And you never saw anything suspicious or out of place?" Officer Hunt asked.
"No."

Lying to the police is a lot easier than I thought.

"But then why did you tell Luke the address?"

"He was her boyfriend. I noticed things got weird between them in the last days. I thought, if he came to look for clues, then he must still feel something good, right?"
The officers exchanged looks. I think I said something wrong.

Uh oh, maybe not that easy.

"It seems you spend a lot of time spying on the Kents," Officer Jack began, "you even know who her boyfriend is."
He said it with an unconvinced look on his face. It looks like I need to try harder.
