With Dad gone, Dean and I went back to our usual. He went out most nights now, and I noticed he didn't bring women over anymore. On Sunday I had him drop me off at Kevin's for studying. We all went downstairs to Kevin's library. We studied a little bit. Only a little. We ended up gawking over hot girls and talking about how lucky I got to have Jess. My friends and I were the geeks of school. We didn't get girlfriends. So, I was lucky. Jess was out of my league.
"Hey so, guys, I found this book. It's a little creepy." Kevin started talking.
"It talks about stuff like, demons, and spirits. It's got like, summoning spells and rituals too." He pulled out a thick brown book that smelt like mold. We all hudled around it. There was tons of stuff in the book. What ever crazy person wrote it really believed it too.
"What if we tried some of this too?" Kevin continued.
"I was thinks this one." He flipped to a page labeled 'Cross Roads Demon'. "It seems the safest.
"Dude this stuff isn't real! Why would we want to try it?" Zachariah asked.
"You're just scared." I mocked.
"Come on let's do it!"
"Wait, it says right there in the title. Cross road. Kevin? Do you have a cross road in your basement?" Zachariah said.
"We can just tell my mom that we need to go to the library." Kevin snapped back.
"I'm in."
"I'm in."
"I'm in."
"I'm in."
"... I don't know about this. It says right here we need cat bone and graveyard dirt." Zachariah tried.
"My mom has some laying around. Don't ask. And I have a pocket knife for some blood."
"Okay let's go."
We headed upstairs with our backpacks trusting not to look suspicious. Kevin's mom was cool with us going to the "library" and Kevin grabbed bone when his mom wasn't looking."We are really going to try this?" I asked. I wasn't much into believing it. It kind of freaked me out though.
"Heck yeah man."
"Well why are we all here when only Kevin will get the deal? The picture of the summoner is Kevin so, he gets the wish right. But it's probably not real so nothing will happen. Right" I continued to ramble.
"We just want to see what will happen..." Kevin said cautiously.
"Hey, do I have to make a deal? Like what if I feel like I don't need anything really?" He asked.
"We should just leave. Come on let's go." Zachariah said tugging at our sleeves.
"Too late. I already buried the stuff." Said one of the guys.
We looked around and saw nothing. We turned around to go back when,
"You boys looking for me?"
We all turned and saw a slender women with long black hair.
"I'm Ruby. Who's wish is my command?"
We all pushed Kevin forward. No one spoke.
"Well what do you want? I can make you a sweet deal you can't resist. What seals the deal? A kiss." She said.
Kevin twitched a little.
"Um, I want to uh, get into Princeton. Full ride." He stammered.
"I can do that. Now, here's the part where we bargain for your soul." She said with a wicked smile.
"My soul?" He asked. I guess none of us read that far into the page.
"Kevin come on. Cancel it. Let's go." Zachariah pleaded.
"Yes your soul. After the agreed amount of years, you die and I get your soul. No cancelations."
"No cancelations?" I piped up. "I don't believe you. If Kevin doesn't want the wish now then, he should be able to say no." I argued.
"Well it looks like you saw right through me. You cancel before you make a deal. After that, no turning back."
Kevin stayed still. He seemed to be in shock.
"Kevin. Psst! Hey Kevin!" I whispered while nudging him.
"Oh um, I don't know. How many years are usual? Like thirty or something?
Ruby laughed.
"Yeah... No. Ten years. But for you. So young, I'd hike it up to fifteen. Also, one kiss from me."
"Kevin that's not very long. We shouldn't. Let's go." We all urged him.
"I'll do it." He said.
"Guys, this is my life long dream. In that time, I can get through college and start a family to carry on my wealth. So what if I die when I'm 32. I have to. My mom will be so disappointed if I don't get into Princeton. I need this." He started walking towards the demon. I ran up and stopped him. I would tackle him to the ground if I needed to. I could not let Kevin do this.
"Kevin! No. This your whole future. You'd only get through college. Who says you can make it with in the following ten years? Wealth takes time! Family does too! You can't do this. I know you will make it into Princeton. And you have so many scholarships, half of it is taken care of. Don't do this." I pleaded.
