ServeATL is an elective class that exposes students to various local non-profits and areas of need in Atlanta. The students do hands-on volunteering with various organizations and the class helps students understand how to best serve the organizations and those in need. The class has covers many topics and has a unit that covers people with disabilities.I met with Ms. Glass, the ServeATL teacher, about presenting to her class to raise awareness about organizations in Atlanta that students can get involved with to support people in our community with disabilities and also to explain the mission of the Play Unified club. I also plan to organize a zoom call for the class with a Special Olympics Athlete so that students can hear her story and ask her questions.
Ms. Glass is excited about working with me to plan this event. I hope that my presentation and the zoom call with the Special Olympics athlete will help students gain acceptance and awareness that could grow into advocacy for people with disabilities. I am currently planning to organize this during 2021 and I am looking forward to it! Thanks to Ms. Glass and Ms. Smith at Special Olympics for helping me with this part of my Girl Scout project!
