This year, I am the president of the Play Unified club at my school. The club partners with organizations around Atlanta to support the mission of the Special Olympics "to help others find joy, confidence, and fulfillment, no matter who they are." The club promotes social inclusion and acceptance for youth and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities by volunteering our time to play sports and participate in other fun activities with them. We also sponsor various events to raise awareness and promote participation in our school community.
As the leader of the club, I prepared a powerpoint presentation for the virtual club fair that included a schedule of Play Unified activities for the school year. It was difficult to to create a schedule of Play Unified activities for the school year because of the lack of opportunities available because of the pandemic, but I was able to compile a fun schedule after corresponding with many local organizations. I am excited about our plans for the year!
I also prepared a fun video with the help of other club leaders to make our club stand out from the others featured at the fair. We had a great turnout at our zoom meeting with over 20 students and everyone signed up to participate in Play Unified events. I spoke at the fair about our Special Pops Tennis Fall Tennis Classic event in October and sent around the sign-up link to encourage students to volunteer. Overall the club fair was a success! We look forward to a fun year with Play Unified!!
